USF Softball Splits Matchups in Saturday Doubleheader

The Bulls avenged a Thursday loss to Purdue but fell to Ohio State in game two


TAMPA, Fla., March 19, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team split its matchups on Saturday, earning a 3-1 win over Purdue to start the day before falling 9-0 to Ohio State in the evening matchup.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) earned the complete-game win in game one, pitching seven innings to surpass Sara Nevins on USF’s innings pitched list. Corrick has now thrown 846.1 innings and passed Nevins’ 844.1 with her first out in the sixth inning.

Alanah Rivera (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led the team on offense, driving home two runs split between a single and a sacrifice bunt to help power the team to the victory. The pair of RBIs puts her at 18 on the season, leading the team.

Game 1 – USF 3, Purdue 1

Purdue took the lead early in USF’s first game of the day on a solo home run in the second inning.

South Florida responded in the fourth. Rivera singled home Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.) to tie the game at one heading into the fifth.

The Bulls put the game away in the sixth. Madison Epperson (Tampa) drew her 13th walk of the season to start the inning. Corrick advanced Epperson with a sacrifice bunt, then Josie Foreman (West Palm Beach, Fla.) drove her home with a double to center. With Courtney Waldo (Palmetto, Fla.) replacing Foreman on the basepaths then stealing third, Rivera drove home her second run of the day with the inning’s second sacrifice bunt to give USF a 3-1 lead.

Corrick kept Purdue off the board for the rest of the game, earning her 20th win of the season.

Game 2 – OSU 9, USF 0 (5)

Ohio State grabbed the lead in the first inning, scoring two on a single off the bat of Mckenzie Bump.

The Buckeyes hit solo home runs in the second and third to expand their lead to 4-0, then added two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the 9-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

Notables

  • Corrick sits just 13 strikeouts away from breaking the program record of 1,103 set by Sara Nevins. She currently has 1,091 with her 12 strikeouts in game one.
  • Alexis Johns (Sarasota) now has 29 stolen bases this season, which is tied for fifth on USF’s single-season list. She’s just ten swipes away from breaking AnaMarie Bruni’s single-season record set last season.
  • Lexie Kopko (Stewartstown, Pa.) and Bailee Leistl (Valrico, Fla.) both made their first starts of the season in game two, while Julia Mrochko (Drums, Pa.) made her first collegiate start.
