TAMPA, March 10, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team continues a 23-game homestand with a set of four this weekend in its latest tournament. The Bulls will host Army, Stony Brook, UMass and Ohio State for one-game each over the weekend.
Recapping the Week
The Bulls are coming off a midweek doubleheader sweep against Stetson. After an 8-0 win in six innings in game one, the Bulls won a pitching duel in game two. Erin Poepping (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Lexie Kopko (Stewartstown, Pa.) combined for the shutout in game one, while Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.), Antoinette Hill (Braidwood, Ill.) and Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) posted the combined shutout in game two.
National Rankings
The Bulls have multiple student-athletes highly ranked in various statistical categories entering the weekend.
After stealing four bases in the doubleheader against Stetson, Alexis Johns (Sarasota) is now the leading base-stealer in Divison I softball with 22 swipes this season. She’s just three stolen bases away from a place on USF’s top 10 list and is 16 away from breaking the program record.
Georgina Corrick, meanwhile, continues to be a dominant force in the circle this season. Nationally, she ranks first in innings pitched (91.0), shutouts (6), strikeouts (136) and victories (14). She also ranks second in hits allowed per seven innings (2.46) and third in ERA (0.08) and strikeout to walk ratio (27.20). The only two pitchers who rank higher than Corrick in ERA have less than a third of the innings she’s pitched and the two pitchers who rank better than her in K-BB ratio have less than 10 percent of her innings.
Success in the Circle
Led by Corrick, the Bulls pitching staff has been one of the best in the country this season. The corps has the 13th best ERA in the nation at 1.41 and has posted 11 shutouts, which is second in the country only behind Oregon.
Bulls in the Rankings
South Florida remained ranked in many national polls entering the season’s fifth week. The Bulls rank as high as No. 21 in the Softball America rankings, while being placed at No. 22 in the D1Softball rankings, the Extra Inning Softball poll and USA Softball/ESPN poll.
