USF Sailing Heads to Women’s Fleet Racing National Championships

Competition begins Tuesday in Kings Point, N.Y.


TAMPA, FLA., MAY 22, 2023 – The USF women’s sailing team will compete in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships starting on Tuesday with the beginning of the 2023 Women’s Fleet Racing Championships.

The Women’s Championship will be held May 23-26, hosted by the US Merchant Marine Academy at Yocum Sailing Center along the shore of Long Island Sound in Kings Point, N.Y.

A total of 36 teams overall will compete at the event, first at a pair of 18-team semifinal regattas on May 23-24. The top nine teams from those two semifinals will advance to a two-day final on May 25-26.

Eleven teams received automatic berths to Nationals and 25 at-large teams were determined by a selection committee.

The top two finishers at each Conference Championship received automatic qualifier berths, with College of Charleston and USF qualifying from the recent SAISA (South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association) Spring Women’s Championships in Charleston, S.C. by finishing first and second, respectively.

Other conference automatic qualifiers are: Stanford University, University of Hawaii, Tulane University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, University of Wisconsin, Northwestern
University, and Yale.


Starters for USF will be: Spring 2023 graduating seniors Sydney Monahan and Liv Smith; Fall 2023 graduating senior MinMin Kelly; juniors Brilan Christopher and Emma Shakespeare; and sophomores Kay Brunsvold and Janie Powell.

The USF sailing program has reached the national finals in nine of the last 10 years. The Bulls finished in the top 10 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The sailing team is based out of St. Petersburg and led by head coach Allison Jolly, a former USA Olympian and 2016 Florida Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
