USF MGolf: Bulls finish season at NCAA Championship

Bulls reached ninth straight NCAA Regional and fourth NCAA Championship

TAMPA, FLA., MAY 29, 2022 – The USF men’s golf team completed another strong season that saw the Bulls reach their ninth NCAA Regional and just the program’s fourth NCAA Championship with three rounds of competition at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Sunday, the Bulls finished 28th in the 30-team field posting rounds of 303, 304 and 299 for a +67 total of 907 on the very difficult 7,289-yard, par 70 course that saw just four players and one team under par after three rounds.

The top fifteen teams and nine individuals not on those teams advanced to Monday’s final 18 holes. Eight of those teams will advance to the final two days of a match-play tournament to determine the team national champion. No. 1-ranked Oklahoma was leading the tournament with a -1 total of 839, the only team under par. No. 2 Oklahoma State (+3), No. 3 Vanderbilt (+5), No. 5 North Carolina (+9) and No. 6 Pepperdine (+13) rounded out the top five with No. 4 Arizona State (+19) sixth. Vanderbilt’s Gordon Sargent led the individual leaderboard at -4.

The Bulls were led in their third NCAA Championship appearance under head coach Steve Bradley by junior Albin Bergstrom (Falsterbo, Sweden). The 2022 AAC Golfer of the Year posted rounds of 75, 75 and 74 for a +14 total of 224, which was good for a finish of T87. Junior Luke Gifford (Boca Raton, Fla.) shot rounds of 78, 76 and 74 for a +18 total of 228.  AAC Tournament runner-up Run Youprayong (Bangkok, Thailand) finished with a +19 total of 229 after rounds of 75, 79 and 75.

Sophomore Sam Nicholson (Atlantic Beach, Fla.), who led the Bulls in advancing from the Palm Beach Gardens Regional, fired rounds of 77, 76 and 77 for a +20 total of 230. Junior Ian Peng (Chang Hua, Taiwan) played the first two rounds of the tournament posting scores of 76 and 77 before freshman Shubham Jaglan (Delhi, India) subbed in for Sunday’s round and posted a score of 77.

The Bulls have won five American Athletic Conference Tournament championships in wire-to-wire fashion, winning four-consecutive from 2015-18. The Bulls have posted 20 tournament wins under Bradley entering the 2021-22 season, by far the most under any coach in program history.
