USF Baseball Opens AAC Play at UAB

The Bulls and Blazers will play a three-game series in Birmingham.

TAMPA, MARCH 20, 2025 – University of South Florida baseball (11-8; 0-0 AAC) heads on the road as Bulls travel to Birmingham, Ala., to open the 2025 American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series against the UAB Blazers (14-7; 0-0 AAC) starting on Friday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.

Setting The Stage:

South Florida is coming off a midweek sweep over the FGCU Eagles on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Bulls snapped their five-game losing streak on Tuesday. On Wednesday, South Florida earned their first win in Fort Myers since 2022, when they won 16-7. On Tuesday, senior Matt Brown earned his first start of the season. In five innings, Brown held the Eagles to three hits and one run. Victor Cartagena got his first career hit, RBI, and start on Tuesday. He led the game with two RBI.

On Wednesday in Fort Myers, Matt Goldenbaum earned the first start of his career. He pitched two hitless innings. Adan Longoria earned the first win of his career. He pitched 1.1 innings, holding FGCU scoreless and striking out two batters. Marcus Brodil had a four-hit outing on Wednesday, a season-high for the Florida native.

USF opened their 60th season, first under Mitch Hannahs, with a home series win over Iowa.

Series History:

The Bulls and Blazers have met 94 times, with the Bulls leading the all-time series 58-36. South Florida dropped the series last season in Tampa, 2-1. In Tampa, the Bulls lead the series 34-13, but the Blazers lead the series in Birmingham 23-22.

Note-A-Bull:

  • Senior Jackson Mayo hit his 25th  career home run against the Eagles on Wednesday. He is now four away from tying Scott Hemond and Bob Ribinski for career home runs.
  • Victor had a career game on Tuesday. The Puerto Rican native got his first career hit, RBI, and start. He finished the game with two of the Bulls’ four RBI.
  • Matt Rose stretches his hit streak to five games.
  • Marcus Brodil had a four-hit outing on Wednesday, a season-high for the Florida native. He added two RBI to his stat line. It was his first multi-RBI game of the season and the fifth of his career. His three hits are the eighth multi-hit game this season.
  • Matt Goldenbaum earned the first start of his career. In 2.0 innings, he held the Eagles hitless and struck out one batter.
  • Matt Brown earned his first start of the season and his first win on Wednesday. He pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out two batters.

Hannahs at the Helm:

Mitch Hannahs was named South Florida’s eighth head coach in program history on June 8, 2024, after compiling 355 wins over 11 seasons at Indiana State. The 2023 ABCA NCAA DI Midwest Region Coach of the Year guided the Sycamores to six conference titles and five NCAA Regionals, guiding ISU to a spot in the 2023 NCAA Super Regional. He takes over a USF team that went 26-29 last year and features 24 new players.

60th Year of USF Baseball:

The South Florida Baseball program played its first season in 1966 and will enter its 60th campaign in 2025. The Bulls have made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and earned their first-ever Super Regional berth in 2021. USF has won 11 conference titles – five tournament titles (3 Sun Belt, 1 Metro, and 1 American) and six regular season championships (3 Sun Belt, 2 Metro, and 1 C-USA). Bulls baseball players have been recognized with All-America honors 12 times, and 19 Bulls have earned Freshman All-America accolades.
