Matt Rose had a pair of run-scoring hits on Sunday, including the game-winner in the 10th inning.
NEW ORLEANS, La. (April 14, 2024) – The University of South Florida Bulls (21-15, 7-5 AAC) outlasted the Tulane University Green Wave (20-16, 5-7 AAC) in a back-and-forth affair that extended into extra innings on Sunday, 9-8. Matt Rose delivered the game-winning hit for South Florida in the top of the 10th inning as the Bulls salvaged the series finale.
It was the second straight Sunday that USF played into extra innings. Last week, the Bulls earned a series sweep over Wichita State in the finale and this week avoided a sweep at the hands of Tulane.
Marcus Brodil (Dunedin) led off the top of the 10th with a double and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Joaquin Monque (Weston). Rose was next for the Bulls and sent a 1-2 pitch back up the middle to chase home Brodil for the game-winning run.
Chandler Dorsey (Lakeland) picked up the win in the longest relief outing of his career. Dorsey (2-1) didn’t allow a baserunner and struck out three batters over 3.1 IP.
South Florida opened the ballgame with an early 4-0 lead after the top of the third inning. Tulane answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 4-3 affair.
Rose collected his first RBI-single of the day in the top of the fourth to pad the USF lead back to 5-3, only to see the Green Wave take their first lead of the afternoon, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Jackson Mayo (St. Johns) wasted little time tying the game with a booming solo home run that traveled 433 feet to center field in the top of the fifth. Later in the inning, with two outs, Monque put the Bulls back in front with a two-run homer.
The Green Wave went on to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score once more, 8-8, and ultimately push the game into extra innings.
Notable
- Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) went 4-for-4 and reached base safely in 11 straight plate appearances spanning Saturday-Sunday. Rozenblum went 7-for-10 with three walks in the series.
- Rose is batting .387 (12-for-31) over 12 conference games to date.
- The Bulls entered the weekend having hit 16 home runs over their previous nine games, but hadn’t homered in the series until Mayo and Monque went deep in the fifth inning.
- Monque recorded his first home run of the season.
- Brodil has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games.
- USF ended the day with 15 hits and has tallied 10 or more hits 22 times this season.
