The Bulls hosted the conference event in St. Petersburg over the weekend; USF advances to the first-ever College Sailing Women’s Team Championship
TAMPA, FLA., APRIL 5, 2022 – The USF women’s sailing team won the SAISA Women’s Team Racing Championship hosted by the Bulls in St. Petersburg Sunday, earning not only a conference title but the chance to compete in the first-ever College Sailing Women’s Team Racing Championship hosted by Brown University, April 23-24.
The conference team racing championship featured four highly competitive teams, as USF took on Jacksonville University, College of Charleston and Eckerd College. The sailing discipline requires six sailors to compete, so only teams with very strong depth of talent are able to challenge for the title.
Three full round-robin rounds were sailed, generally averaging 9-10 minutes in length as winds were mainly between 6-8 knots, building to 8-10 knots midday and then fading in the afternoon.
Racing was tight, with the top three teams separated by only one win. USF prevailed with a 7-2 record, followed closely by Jacksonville (6-3) and Charleston (5-4). The USF team consisted of skippers freshman Heidi Hicks, sophomore Emmaa Shakespeare and junior Sydney Monahan and crew of senior Carolina Perez Rovira and juniors Min Min Kelly and Jackie Morrison.
The Bulls finished fourth in the SAISA Women’s Fleet Racing Championship held on Saturday in St. Petersburg. Eight teams competed in the conference event that featured 18-minute races.
Jacksonville University and College of Charleston finished first and second in the event and advance to the College Sailing’s Women’s Fleet Racing National Championships semifinals hosted by Tulane University on May 23-24. The battle for third, fourth and fifth came down to the last race of the day, separated by only six points.
