GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida women’s tennis will open the 2022 dual match campaign on Sunday and Monday when North and South Florida visit Gainesville and the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
Sunday’s match with North Florida is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. ET while South Florida will matchup with Florida at 3 p.m. ET on Monday afternoon. The Gators will wear special warm-up shirts on Sunday in honor of the 50th anniversary of women’s sports at Florida.
In the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s team rankings, Florida held steady at the No. 20 spot and hold four doubles pairings and two singles spots.
Florida opened their spring season at the Freeman Memorial Tournament in Las Vegas where the freshman duo of Alicia Dudeney and Bente Spee captured the first doubles title at the event for UF since the 2004 campaign. The pair, ranked No. 46 in the ITA doubles rankings, overcame Stanford’s No. 38 team of Connie Ma and Angelica Blake, 6-4, to take the title.
The No. 24-ranked duo of Carly Briggs and Marlee Zein also earned a ranked win on the final day of the tournament, downing No. 11 Lisa Zaar and Victories Flores of Pepperdine, 6-4.
Other Gators earning ranked-victories included No. 87 Emma Shelton over No. 30 Victoria Flores of Pepperdine (6-2, 7-5) and McCartney Kessler over No. 49 Sasha Vagramov of UCLA (6-3, 6-2).
Florida welcomes back four athletes from a season ago in addition to two transfers and a trio of freshmen. Carly Briggs and Emma Shelton join Florida after spending time previously at Tennessee and South Carolina, respectively.
Senior McCartney Kessler, utilizing her extra year of eligibility, looks to lead the way following a 2021 campaign that saw her earn All-American honors in both singles and doubles competition. Fellow senior, Marlee Zein, also returns after a big junior campaign that ended with All-American honors alongside Kessler.
