GAINESVILLE, Fla. – For the second time in three games, Florida women’s basketball is slated to take on a top-25 opponent when they head to College Station, Texas, for a 3 p.m. ET matchup with No. 25 Texas A&M on Sunday, Jan. 9.
The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+ while Kyle Crooks and Brittany Davis will handle radio responsibilities on 98.1FM/850AM WRUF.
Sunday’s matchup with Texas A&M marks the 13th meeting between the Aggies and Gators. Texas A&M holds an 11-1 advantage, including six in-a-row and an undefeated mark in College Station. The lone Florida win in the series came on Feb. 4, 2016 when the Gators earned an 83-81 victory in Gainesville.
During their last outing, the Gators fell to Ole Miss, 74-56, on Thursday evening, battling with the Rebels late into the game despite missing five players. Kiara Smith led the offensive effort with 13 points in addition to seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Faith Dut had a strong outing for the Gators, ending with a season-high 12 points. Florida did manage to outrebound the Rebels, 44-41.
The graduate veteran, Smith’s defense has risen to an elite level during the 2021-22 season, sitting at eighth nationally with a total of 43 steals on the year. She is also ranked 25th in the nation in steals per game, averaging 2.87 during each outing. Those numbers are good for third and fourth in the SEC, respectively.
Thursday was the first time since March 2, 2017 that the Gators didn’t convert on a three-point attempt, snapping a 131-game streak with at least one three. Florida’s defense also managed to hold the Rebels to 0-of-4 from deep, marking the first time the Gators have held an opponent without a triple since LSU finished 0-of-2 on Feb. 25, 2016. Thursday also marked the first time neither Florida, nor their opponent, has converted a three-pointer in a game since Feb. 22, 2015 when Texas A&M ended 0-for-6 and Florida finished 0-of-8.
Texas A&M enters Sunday’s contest with a 10-4 record (0-2 SEC), most recently falling on the road at No. 7 Tennessee, 73-45. The Aggies currently sit at 35th in the NET rankings while the Gators sit at 95th.
