After an impressive first season with the Gators, Zippy Broughton has announced her plan to return to Florida for the 2022-23 season.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida women’s basketball senior Zippy Broughton announced Friday her plans to utilize her extra year of eligibility and return to the Gators for the 2022-23 season.
Broughton put together an impressive first season with the Gators after transferring from Rutgers, averaging 10.5 points, which was third on the team, 4.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Broughton was even more impressive in Southeastern Conference play, averaging 13.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game in 14 games played.
“Gator Nation! I am blessed to have been welcomed into this amazing university with open arms,” Broughton said. “I am also very excited to share one last year with the best fanbase, and family, in the nation. Go Gators!”
The Wetumpka, Ala., native, who started in 19 of her 30 games played, scored in double-figures 17 times, including three games with 20 or more points. She recorded a career-high 28 points in a comeback victory over No. 25 Texas A&M, a game which proved to be the turning point for the Gators’ season.
Broughton recorded a stretch of 11-consecutive games in double-figures during SEC play, including 21 points on the road at Mississippi state on Feb. 10. In the absence of Kiara Smith at the SEC tournament in March, the senior put up 26 points to lead the Gators offensively against Ole Miss in the quarterfinal round. She also tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists against UCF in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Gators, who qualified for their first NCAA Tournament since the 2015-16 campaign, will bring back three of their top four scorers from last season.
