The Gators men’s team will have 12 athletes compete in 11 events at the National Championship.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Friday was the last opportunity for members of the Gators Men’s Track & Field program to punch tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The athletes took full advantage of that opportunity.
Ten athletes secured spots in eight different events during the final day of men’s preliminary competition. The ten Gators include: Wanya McCoy (100m, 200m, 4x100m), Robert Gregory (200m, 4x100m), Jevaughn Powell (400m, 4x100m, 4x400m), Reheem Hayles (400m, 4x400m), Parvej Khan (1500m), Malique Smith-Band (4x100m), Rios Prude Jr. (4x400m), Jenoah McKiver (4x400m), Sean Dixon-Bodie (Triple Jump) and Kai Chang (Discus).
Outlined below is how these athletes secured their spots in Eugene.
Men’s Discus Throw
Chang was the first Gator to book his ticket during Friday’s action. The University of Florida school record holder in the Discus Throw and Southeastern Conference silver medalist advanced to NCAAs courtesy of a fourth-place finish and a throw of 59.41m/194’11”. This will be the second NCAA Championship Chang will compete in during 2024, after competing in Shot Put at NCAA Indoors.
Men’s Triple Jump
Dixon-Bodie doubled his NCAA Outdoor Championship entries on Friday night. After advancing in the Long Jump on Wednesday, the redshirt junior locked up a spot in the Triple Jump as well. His best jump of the competition landed at 16.18m/53’1” which was good for third place.
Men’s 4x100m Relay
The quartet of Powell, McCoy, Smith-Band and Gregory auto-qualified for the 4x100m semifinal in Eugene, Oregon after finishing second in heat one. The Gators, who finished as bronze medalists in the event at the 2023 National Championships, tallied a time of 38.66.
Men’s 1500m
In just his first collegiate season, Khan will compete in his second NCAA Championship when the Gators travel to Eugene. The freshman finished fifth in his heat to earn an automatic bid to the semifinal round of the 1500m. He finished with a time of 3:45.86.
Men’s 100m
After finishing second in his heat and running a time of 10.06 in the 100m quarterfinals, McCoy had advanced to the NCAA Championship in a second event and first individual event. This will mark the first time since 2022 that McCoy will participate in an individual event at outdoor nationals.
Men’s 400m
Two Gators are set to compete in the 400m at NCAA Outdoors. Hayles and Powell will both return to the national championship in the event that they placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in 2023. Hayles advanced courtesy of a second-place finish in the second heat and a time of 45.68 and Powell qualified thanks to a third-place finish in his heat.
Men’s 200m
The same amount of Gators that qualified in the 400m also advanced in the 200m. McCoy and Gregory were the duo that emerged in said event. McCoy qualified for his third event with a first-place finish in the third heat and a time of 19.95. Gregory also advanced automatically behind a third-place finish in heat two.
Men’s 4x400m Relay
The Gators closed the night by punching their final ticket in the 4x400m relay. Hayles, Prude Jr., McKiver and Powell were the quartet that earned an automatic bid to the national championship by placing first in the first of three heats.
