UF S&D | Smith, Dressel Set Records on Day Two of Phillips 66

Kieran Smith, Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky all secured their spots in Budapest on the second day of the meet.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kieran Smith posted the top 200M freestyle time in the world this year and Caeleb Dressel broke the U.S. Open record in the 50M butterfly to qualify for the FINA World Championships in Budapest.

Joining Smith and Dressel in Budapest is Katie Ledecky, who put together the top time in the A Final of the 200m Free.

Smith was the first Gator of the night to secure a spot in the FINA World Championships after placing first in the 200M freestyle finals with the best time in the world this season of 1:45.25. Also competing in the A Final of the 200M free was Trey Freeman, who placed sixth overall with a time of 1:46.93.

Dressel broke another record on the night as the Gator posted the top time of 22.84 to surpass the previous U.S. Open record of 22.91 set by Bryan Lundquist in 2009. With this win, Dressel qualifies for his second event in Budapest after winning the 100M free last night. Gator Jace Crawford also swam in the 50M fly and finished sixth in the B final and 14th overall in the event.

Ledecky qualified for her second event at the FINA World Championships with a 200M free swim of 1:55.15 in the A Finals to place first. Also competing in the 200M free was Micayla Cronk, who swam a time of 2:04.08 to finish eighth in the C Final.

Natalie Hinds put together a fast time in the 50M fly as she placed sixth with a mark of 26.18. Olivia Peoples turned in a 15th-place finish overall and seventh-place outing in the B Final in the same event with a time of 27.59.

In the 200M breaststroke, Dillon Hillis was the only Gator to compete as he finished 13th overall and fifth in the B Final with a swim of 2:14.52.

Macguire McDuff also competed for the Gators on Day 2 of the International Trials, finishing 48th in the 200M free with a time of 1:56.16.

Tomorrow’s races will begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s 400-meter Individual Medley.
