UF S&D | Gators Find Success in Swimming Events at 2023 Pan Americans Championships

Adam Chaney, Mason Laur, Alfonso Mestre, and Edouard Fullum-Huot earned a combined seven top-three finishes in the swimming portion of the 2023 Pan American Games.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – 2022-23 gradate, Alfonso Mestre swam a 15:19.16 in the 1500m Freestyle to win bronze and close out his Pan American’s run with three medals. Mason Laur finished the 200 IM in 2:02.22 this afternoon to complete the Gators competing in swimming events at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Laur and Mestre, along with Adam Chaney and Edouard Fullum-Huot, represented their home country at the 2023 Pan American’s Championship. Chaney and Laur were apart of Team USA, Mestre for Venezuela, and Fullum-Huot swam for Team Canada.

Laur finished second in the 200 IM prelims this morning  with a 2:02.41 time. The Florida junior earned gold in the Men’s 200 Butterfly after clocking a 1:56.44 to come within a second of his personal best 1:55.67 in the opening day of swimming events on Oct. 21.

Adam Chaney took home gold after swimming a 54.20 in the Men’s 100m Backstroke on Monday, October 23rd. The Florida senior advanced to the finals after finishing second with a 54.71 in the prelims. Chaney was also a part of Team USA’s silver finish in the Men’s 4 x 100m Free Relay, that swam a 3:14.22 in the finals heat.

Edouard Fullum-Huot was on Canada’s 4 x 100m Free Relay that won bronze. He was the anchor and finished with an overall time of 3:15.83. His team won heat 1 in the prelims after clocking a 3:39.27 to finish over seven seconds ahead of second.

Representing Venezuela, Alfonso Mestre earned bronze in the 1500m after clocking a 15:19.16 and won silver in the Men’s 400 Freestyle (3:47.62) and in the 800m Freestyle (7:54.46) He also earned one fifth place finished in the Men’s 4 x 100 Free Relay after his team swam a 3:20.79, and finished sixth in the 200m free after touching the wall in 1:49.29.

Top athletes from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean’s will come together in Santiago, Chile, from 20 October-5 November for the Pan American Games 2023. More than 100 direct quota spots for qualification to the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available, with swimming being one.
