Gianna Monaco scored her second game-winning goal in the final seconds this season, capping off a three-goal day for the junior. It was the fifth-consecutive win for the Gators.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Gianna Monaco’s game winning goal with five seconds remaining in overtime, pushed the No. 7 Florida lacrosse team (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) to a 13-12 victory over No. 15 Penn (4-3, 1-0 Ivy).
The game featured seven ties and four lead changes, with the Gators trailing by as many as three goals in the second half. It is the fourth come-from-behind victory of the season for Florida and its fifth win of the season over a ranked opponent.
Monaco scored her second game-winning goal of the season in the late seconds, following an early game winner over Johns Hopkins with 17 seconds to play in the first game of the season. The junior logged a hat-trick in the win.
Overall five different Gators recorded goals, led by a career high five goals from Kaitlyn Davies. Three of the captains five goals came in the fourth quarter, including the game tying goal with 13 seconds remaining to push the game to overtime.
Frannie Hahn recorded her third game of eight or more points this season, tallying two goals and six assists on the day. Gabby Greene totaled two goals and Jordan Basso recorded a score.
The Gators mounted a season high 22 ground balls, featured by 12 different players recording a ground ball and eight different players scooping two or more. Josie and Frannie Hahn led the way with three apiece.
How It Happened
First Quarter
* The Quakers opened up the scoring 42 seconds into the game before the Gators answered with three unanswered goals in the next 8:46. Frannie Hahn found Davies over the middle in front of the net for the first score, before Hahn found Greene in front of the crease for another score.
* Basso completed the 3-0 run after scooping Monaco’s shot that hit the cross bar and put the ball in the back of the cage giving UF a 3-1 advantage with 5:32 to play.
* Penn nodded two goals in the next 1:27 to even the game at 3-3. Off a Gators clear in the final 18.7, Basso found the back of the net a second too late, as time expired with the score tied at 3-3 after one.
Second Quarter
* After Penn connected first at the 13:51 mark, the Gators struck even with 17 seconds remaining off a Frannie Hahn feed to Monaco to knot it up at 4-4.
* Hoey recorded three saves in the quarter, as the Gators and Quakers went into half tied at four.
Third Quarter
* The Gators struck first, off a man-up goal from a Frannie Hahn to Monaco connection, giving UF the 5-4 advantage with 13:48 remaining.
* Penn responded with four unanswered goals to make it 8-5, before UF closed the quarter on a 3-0 run to tie it up at 8-8.
* Davies connected on a free-position opportunity at the 7:06 mark, before Frannie Hahn scored back-to-back goals at the 5:03 and 4:50 points, assisted from Monaco on the second goal.
Fourth Quarter
* The Quakers scored two goals to start, but the Gators answered right back with a score from Greene off an assist from Frannie Hahn, followed by a free-position score from Davies to tie it at 10-10 with 4:34 to play.
* The Gators took their first lead since the beginning of the third quarter, as Hahn found Davies around the cage for the score with 3:41 to play, as UF led 11-10.
* Penn connected on two goals, including a go-ahead man-up score with 43 seconds left to push the Quakers in front 12-11.
* On the next draw control, Zusi was able to pitch it back into the defensive end where Ashley Dyer controlled the draw.
* Off a loose ball, Davies was fouled with 15 seconds remaining, resulting in a free-position opportunity.
* Davies drove in and tied it up at 12 with 13 seconds to play for her fifth goal of the game and third goal of the quarter. UF and Penn would head to overtime.
Overtime
* Penn won the opening draw control of overtime, but Sam Hughes caused a turnover on Anna Brandt by taking a charge around the crease, to give UF possession.
* Off a loose ball, Monaco scooped the ground ball and found the back of the cage with five seconds to play in overtime, to secure the 13-12 victory.
