UF LAX: No. 7 Florida Falls Short of Comeback against No. 10 Navy in 14-11 Defeat

The Gators fall to 2-2 against ranked opponents

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 7/7 Florida Lacrosse team (3-2) couldn’t compete a fourth quarter comeback against No. 10/10 Navy (5-0) as they fall 14-11 to the Midshipmen on Saturday morning.

The Gators were led and by Gabby Koury and Boo DeWitt, each with three goals and one assist, and Frannie Hahn with three assists. Five players ended with two ground balls for the Gators as seven players registered a caused turnover

The Midshipmen were led by Ava Yovino with three goals and three assists and Alyssa Chung with 2 goals and 2 assists.

How it Happened
FIRST QUARTER (Gators 4, Midshipmen 2)

  *   After Navy opened the scoring with a goal by Alyssa Chung, Florida would score three straight, from Caroline Hoskins (8:10), Autumn Blair (7:44), and Gabbi Koury (6:58), to take a 3-1 lead.
  *   The Gators and Midshipmen would trade goals to end the first quarter, with Ava Yovino adding one for Navy at 5:02 and Gabby Greene pushing the Gators lead by to two at 3:55.

SECOND QUARTER (Midshipmen 7, Gators 6)

  *   Ava Yovino for Navy and Gabbi Koury for Florida each scored their second of the game to start the second quarter.
  *   In the final 7:50 of the first half, Navy would go on a 4-1 run, with the Gators getting a goal from Boo DeWitt with 3:00 left, and the Gators would go into the second half down one.

THIRD QUARTER (Midshipmen 13, Gators 8)

  *   After Navy scored in the first 40 seconds of the second half, Gabbi Koury added her third goal of the day off an Autumn Blair assist.
  *   The Midshipmen would add three goals before Boo DeWitt scored her second of the day to cut Navy’s lead to three.
  *   Navy would add two more in the final four minutes of the third quarter to take a 13-8 lead into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER (Midshipmen 14, Gators 11)

  *   Gabby Greene would try to kick start a comeback for the Gators, with her tally at 10:21 to make it 13-9.
  *   Kaitlyn Davies would respond 10 second after a Navy goal by corralling the draw control and taking to the goal to make it 10-14.
  *   Boo DeWitt added her third goal of the day at 7:18 off a Gabbi Koury assist, but Florida was unable to continue the comeback and fall 14-11

Key Notes

  *   Boo DeWitt and Gabbi Koury each scored their first hat trick of the season. Each of their three goals and four points were a new season high for each player.
  *   Caroline Hoskins registered her first career assist today and her second straight multi-point game.
  *   Florida continued to be successful on the clear, going 20-21 against Navy and is now 77-for-80 (.963) on the year.
  *   The Gators now move to 2-2 against ranked opponents on the season, with three more ranked opponents who are currently ranked on the schedule (vs No.21/17 Penn on March 11th, at No. 1/1 North Carolina on March 17th, and vs No. 11/15 Colorado on April 4th)
  *   The seven goals scored by Navy in the second half are the most given up by the Gators in the second half on the season.
