GATORS IN THE POLLS
Florida dropped from No. 7 to No. 13 in the D1Baseball Top 25 on Monday despite going 1-3 in four road games against top-five opponents. The Gators are ranked as highly as No. 8 nationally by Baseball America, who moved the Gators down from No. 6 following their road trip.
COMFY AT CONDRON
Florida has promptly returned to its winning ways at Condron Family Ballpark in 2025, as the Gators are 13-1 at home to open the campaign. In those 14 games, the Gators are slashing .354/.465/.608 with 23 homers and 27 steals while pitching to a 2.92 ERA and 171-to-47 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 114 innings. Conversely, opponents have batted .202/.289/.268 with four homers and 12 steals while producing a 10.87 ERA and 86-to-68 K-to-BB-ratio on the mound.
SULLY SUPERLATIVES
Coming off the program’s 14th trip to the College World Series and second in as many seasons, O’Sullivan is in his 18th year at the helm. Since O’Sullivan’s 2008 arrival, Florida leads the nation with 290 SEC wins, 37 MLB debuts, 16 NCAA berths (T-1st), 10 top-eight seeds, nine College World Series trips, nine Super Regionals hosted and six SEC titles. The Gators have advanced to nine of the last 14 College World Series. With a 290-192 record (.602) in SEC play since 2008, Florida leads the conference as the only program above .600 in that span.
LAST TIME OUT
Prior to SEC Opening Weekend, the Gators took down No. 5 Florida State in Tallahassee on Tuesday, 7-2, in the first of three regular-season meetings. Florida took the lead in the second inning and never relinquished it to give FSU their first loss of the campaign. The Gators were then swept at No. 2 Tennessee by scores of 5-3, 10-0 and 7-4.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
After 21 games, Florida is ranked inside the top-30 teams nationally across 10 statistical categories. Leading the SEC with the seventh-most shutouts (three) in the country, the Gators boast the third-best strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.70) and fifth-highest strikeouts per nine (12.4) nationally. Florida also ranks 11th in the nation in WHIP (1.17), 18th in hit-by-pitches (43), 20th in hits allowed per nine (7.14), 22nd in walks allowed per nine (3.36), 23rd in doubles (46), 24th in home runs (30) and 26th in hits (212).
ROTATION ROCKING
In 15 weekend starts alone, Florida has already matched its quality starts total (five) from all of last season, including 2024 midweek games and the postseason. Across 21 total games, Gators starting pitching has produced a 9-3 record, 2.18 ERA, .178 batting average against and 129-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
MURDERER’S ROW
Five qualified Florida hitters enter the midweek with an OPS above .980 in catcher/designated hitter Brody Donay<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/brody-donay/17324> (1.350), infielder Bobby Boser<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/bobby-boser/17349> (1.020), infielder Colby Shelton<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/colby-shelton/17335> (1.002), outfielder Blake Cyr<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/blake-cyr/17347> (.994) and infielder Brendan Lawson<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/brendan-lawson/17350> (.983). Although he is just two at bats shy of qualifying, utilityman Justin Nadeau<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/justin-nadeau/17342> sports a 1.031 OPS behind a .400/.556/.475 slash line (16-for-40). 12 Gators have posted multi-hit games on the year while eight different UF players have logged three-hit games.
MOUND MONSTERS
Florida pitchers have produced a 237-to-64 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 171 1/3 innings pitched this season. The Gators have fanned double-digit batters in 16 of 21 games. Showing excellent control, Florida has walked two batters or fewer 11 times, and four or less in 16 games.
BELTIN’ SHELTON
Finishing SEC Opening Weekend a combined 5-for-11 at the plate, Shelton has now reached base safely in all 21 games to open the 2025 season. His on-base streak stretches a total of 24 contests dating back to the 2024 College World Series. On the season, Shelton is now batting .373/.436/.566 with two homers and an SEC-leading 10 doubles. His team-high 31 hits are tied for the fourth-most in the SEC. Shelton’s strikeout rate sits at a minuscule 8.5% after fanning at a 26.4% clip one year ago, as he has drawn more free bases (10 – 6 BB, 4 HBP) than strikeouts (eight).
QUALITY KING
True freshman right-hander Aidan King<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/aidan-king/17366> dominated No. 2 Tennessee across six innings of one-run ball in game two, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out six. Not only did the outing mark King’s SEC debut as well as his first-career road start, but it represented back-to-back quality starts for the rookie in his first-two career starting nods. King leads the Gators with a cheeky 0.81 ERA and .169 batting average against, which rank second and eighth in the SEC, respectively. Over 22 1/3 innings, he carries a 0.72 WHIP and 26-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
STEALING THE SHOW
The Gators have stolen 35 bases in 42 attempts (83.3%), equating to 1.7 steals per game. For reference, the Gators averaged 0.7 steals per game last season. After 21 contests, the Gators are already 81.4% of the way to reaching their 2024 steals total (43). Boser leads the team with six stolen bases in six attempts, while Cyr and outfielder Hayden Yost<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/hayden-yost/17337> are both 5-for-5. 10 different Gators have stolen a base this season.
ALEX FILTH-POTT
In his second season, right-handed pitcher Alex Philpott<https://floridagators.com/sports/baseball/roster/alex-philpott/17333> is tied for first in the SEC with seven games finished (in seven appearances). Headlined by two saves, Philpott has produced stellar numbers as the UF closer thus far: 3.38 ERA, .179 batting average against and a 16-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 10 2/3 frames.
STREAKY MARKERS
In addition to Shelton’s on-base streak, Cyr has reached base safely in all 20 games he has played in. Cyr is also riding a team-high, nine-game hitting streak, during which he has batted .355/.394/.581. Nadeau has the next-longest active on-base streak on the roster, having reached in nine in a row. Shelton paces UF with 11 multi-hit games while Donay and Lawson are tied with seven multi-RBI games apiece.
RELENTLESS REPTILES
Florida has secured six come-from-behind victories in its 16-5 start. Last season, the Gators delivered 21 wins in comeback fashion, featuring 12 of the team’s 13 SEC wins. Florida trailed in six of its 2024 postseason victories and claimed five-straight NCAA Tournament elimination games to keep its season alive. Going back two seasons, 22 of the 2023 Gators’ program-record 54 victories came via comebacks.
