BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s soccer head coach Erica Demers has announced the 2022 Spring schedule. The Blazers will play five contests beginning March 5 with Mississippi State at newly named PNC Field (formerly BBVA Field).
UAB will travel to Montevallo on March 25 and Jacksonville State on April 2 before hosting Memphis on April 9. The season wraps up at Columbus State on April 16.
The Blazers are coming off a 2021 season where they advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship for the first time since 2009. UAB returns four all-conference players in Stella Kiss, Kendall Page, Laura Zemberyova and Asha Zuniga.
2022 SPRING OPPPNENTS
MISSISSIPPI STATE
2021 Record: 5-8-3 (2-6-1 SEC, 7th place West)
Postseason: None
Top returners: Andrea Tyrrell (All-Sec defender), Maddy Anderson (All-SEC keeper), Ally Perry (All-SEC forward)
The Bulldogs lost their top three point scorers from last season, but they added quality talent for the spring headed up by transfers Alexis Gutierrez and Haley McWhirter. Gutierrez, a midfielder from Saint Mary’s was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. McWhirter, a midfielder who played at East Carolina, was the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.
MONTEVALLO
2021 Record: 8-8-1 (5-7-1 Gulf South, 9th place)
Postseason: None
Top returners: Heather Gomez (5g, 3a, 13p), Marica Miljanovic (3g, 2a, 8p)
The Falcons are a Division II team that participates on the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo will be without leading scorer Allye Darnell and keeper Angel Hailey who both graduated.
JACKSONVILLE STATE
2021 Record: 7-10-2 (3-5-1, ASUN, 5th Place West)
Postseason: ASUN Quarterfinals
Top Returners: Cephana Deane (6g, 1a, 13p), Morgan Lerch (4 SHO, 7 wins, 1.98 GAA)
The Gamecocks are a young team that will return the majority of its players from 2021. JSU had 17 underclassmen on their roster last season and only one true senior.
MEMPHIS
2021 Record: 14-5-2 (5-3-0 American, 3rd place – AAC Champions)
Postseason: NCAA Second Round
The Tigers are coming off an impressive season where they spent eight weeks in the top-25 with their highest ranking of No.14/15 in the USC and TDS rankings, respectively. Memphis returns six of its seven all-conference players including leading scorers Jocelyn Alonzo and Tanya Boychuk, both who scored six goals and had four assists for 16 points.
COLUMBUS STATE
2021 Record: 19-3-1 (9-0-0 Peach Belt, 1st place – PBC runner-up)
Postseason: NCAA D-II Second Round
Always a top team in their conference the Cougars are coming off their 16th consecutive winning season and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the country during the fall. CSU will return All-American midfielder Carley Canzoneri.
