BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team closed out nonconference play with a 70-56 victory over Alcorn State on Wednesday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Margaret Whitley led all players with 18 points and Denim DeShields scored 14. Amiya Payne added a career-high 11 points off the bench for the Blazers (8-2, 0-1 C-USA).
The Lady Braves’ Kiarra Henderson was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. Alcorn State (4-7, 0-0 SWAC) remains winless on the road this season.
UAB, who led for all but 30 seconds, did not build a double-digit lead until 8:06 of the 3rd quarter when Lyndsey Robson’s 3-pointer made the score 39-29. However, the Lady Braves were able to cut a 13-point deficit into five heading into the 4th quarter trailing 50-45.
The Blazers opened the 4th quarter on a 13-1 run, to take a commanding 17-point lead at the midway point, 63-46. UAB’s lead would get as high as 19 points.
“I’m really pleased with the resilience our kids showed today. Playing three games in five days is tough,” said head coach Randy Norton.
After the break, the Blazers continue Conference USA play beginning Dec. 29 at UTEP and Dec. 31 at UTSA. The next homestand will be Jan. 5 against Florida Atlantic and Jan. 7 against FIU.
