BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team fell to North Texas 67-54 on Monday afternoon.
Kylee Schneringer led the Blazers (12-8, 5-4 C-USA) with 14 points. Destinee McGhee added 13 points and seven rebounds. Margaret Whitley scored 11.
Amber Dixon led all scorers with 20 points for the Mean Green (10-10, 4-6 C-USA).
UAB fell behind by seven points at the end of the 1st quarter after Aly Gamez’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer made the score 17-10. Quincy Noble’s and-1 gave UNT its first double-figure lead of the game at the 4:02 mark of the 2nd quarter at 28-18. North Texas would take a 15-point lead into halftime 36-21.
UNT would increase its lead to 19 points midway through the 3rd quarter at 44-25. However, the Blazers closed on a 15-4 run to make the score 48-40 heading into the final stanza.
A 3-pointer by Whitley with 2:05 remaining kept the Blazers within eight points at 60-52, but UAB would only get one field goal the rest of the game.
The Mean Green took advantage of 22 Blazers’ turnovers which they turned into 25 points. UNT outscored UAB in the paint 36-26.
Up next, UAB hits the road to face Southern Miss (14-7, 6-4 C-USA) on Feb. 10. The Golden Eagles will play UTSA later this evening. The Blazers return home on Feb. 13 to host Old Dominion.
