BIRMINGHAM- The UAB volleyball team finished the Green Wave Invitational with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) setback against Tulane on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers drop to 4-6 on the season.
Fernanda Maida recorded 11 kills and Alex Kells tallied 10 along with nine digs. Lidya Canturk had 11 assists. Tatijana Fucka had a match-high six blocks.
The Green Wave led the 1st set wire-to-wire, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead in their 25-16 win.
The 2nd set had eight ties and four lead changes. With the Blazers ahead 21-20, Tulane scored the five points to take the set 25-21.
Tulane jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 3rd set before UAB tied the match at 8-8. With the score deadlocked at 17-17, the Green Wave rattled off six straight points and eight of the next 11 to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Despite the loss, the Blazers were paced by a strong outing from Kells, who was named to the All-Tournament team. She racked up 33 kills during this weekend’s tournament.
UAB finished the weekend with 127 total team kills and 29 blocks.
Next weekend, the Blazers open Conference USA play with two matches against Southern Miss, with the first on Friday, September 24 at 6 P.M, and Saturday, September 25 at 2 P.M.
