UAB Signs Tobias Rotegaard to National Letter of Intent

BIRMINGHAM – UAB head men’s basketball coach Andy Kennedy has announced the signing of Tobias Rotegaard (Kongsberg, Norway/ Sunrise Christian Academy) to a National Letter of Intent.

Considered one of the top Scandinavian prospects, the 6-7, 210 lb. forward began his American basketball career at one of the nation’s powerhouse schools, Oak Hill Academy during the 2018-19 school year. He helped the Warriors to a 33-5 record and a No. 7 national ranking. The sharpshooter converted 51 percent of his field goal attempts, including 47 percent from 3-point range.

From Oak Hill, Rotegaard played his senior season at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kan. He helped Sunrise to a 22-4 record and a No. 6 ranking among postgraduate teams in the nation. Rotegaard averaged 10 points while shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc.

Rotegaard brings a bevy of international experience to the table. He was named most valuable player in the 2019 Nordic Championships. He followed that with another MVP performance at the U19 Norwegian Championships where he averaged 25 points per game. He capped the summer of 2019 by playing on the World Select Team at the NBA Academy Games in Atlanta.  Rotegaard was selected by the USA College Network as one of the top prospects that participated in the event.

In 2018, Rotegaard was a member of the U18 Norway National Team that played in the FIBA European Championships. He averaged 14.4 ppg, 6 rpg and shot 43 percent from the 3-point range. He scored in double-figures in all of Norway’s eight games and recorded a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds against Portugal in the Group Phase.

“We are excited to add Tobias to our program,” said Kennedy.  “He is a tremendous shooter with a high basketball IQ that will have the opportunity to play multiple positions for us during his time here. Tobias has had a very unique basketball journey, having played in multiple international competitions as well as having prepped at two of the most prestigious basketball powers in the country in Oak Hill Academy and Sunrise Christian Academy. That experience will serve him well at UAB.”
