The Owls Split Wednesday’s Practice

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Wednesday’s Florida Atlantic University football practice touched all the bases. The Owls worked on fundamentals, worked on future opponent “looks,” and closed by splitting into red and white teams in preparation for this Saturday’s Spring Game, scheduled for 3 p.m. in FAU Stadium.

PRACTICE NOTES

  • Matthew Akuchie caught a 60-yard TD pass from Michael Johnson Jr.
  • Austin Evans swung around to catch a pass to his back, recovered with another spin and sprinted to the end zone, beating two defenders with his size
  • What would be selected as the “Play of the Day” was a pass attempt by Johnson to Jordan Merrell. The pass was deflected by Ahman Ross, actually batted as he was falling, to Jordan Helm, who gathered it in on the two-yard line

SPEED ZONE

Something new to the Owls’ practice is announcing players to break 20 mph. Players wear a vest, that among other things, measures their speeds throughout the day. The moment a player hits the speed of 20 mph, a horn sounds and the strength coaches drop and do a regiment of pushups. On Tuesday, Zyon Gilbert was the only Owl to break the barrier.
