BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University football team (3-3, 2-0 AAC) will play host to UTSA (3-3, 2-0 AAC) this Saturday at 6 p.m. in a game that will serve as the Owls’ homecoming. The matchup will air on ESPN+.
The Owls have won back-to-back American Athletic Conference games, the latest at USF last weekend that ended 56-14 in favor of FAU. Entering the fourth meeting between FAU and UTSA, the Owls hold the series at 3-0, but the Roadrunners have captured the last two Conference USA championships, the league both UTSA and FAU formerly played in.
Both programs are less than 25 years old, with the Owls being the older brother by 10 years. Both were started from scratch under the direction of former University of Miami head coaches: FAU in 2001 and UTSA in 2011.
The Owls are ready for the challenge and if the first six games of the 2023 season are an indication, FAU’s defense will be ready for the challenge. With the exception of one game, Clemson, the Owls have proven to be very stingy on defense. Last week, the Owls held USF, averaging 28.6 points per game, to half their average production at 14 points. If the game in Death Valley is removed, FAU’s defense allows just 16.8 points per game and is No. 28 national in defensive scoring, No. 3 in the AAC.
