Two years ago in Arizona, the Philadelphia Eagles arrived at Super Bowl LVII with excitement
and energy. They had been the most dominant team in the NFC and were confident in their
ability to finish the job. But when the dust settled, they walked away with heartbreak after a 38-
35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
This time around, the vibe is different.
“The goal wasn’t just getting there, the goal was to win it all,” running back Saquon Barkley said.
The Eagles have carried a business-like approach throughout Super Bowl week in New
Orleans, making it clear that they are here for one reason—to finish what they couldn’t in 2023.
So how can Philadelphia get it done on Sunday? Here’s what they need to do to hoist the
Lombardi Trophy.
Win the Battle in the Trenches
The Eagles’ offensive line has been one of the best in football for years, but they will have their
hands full against a Chiefs pass rush led by Chris Jones and George Karlaftis. Philadelphia’s
ability to protect Jalen Hurts and open running lanes for Barkley will be critical.
Landon Dickerson and the interior offensive line must neutralize Jones, who wrecked the game
against the 49ers in last year’s Super Bowl. If the Eagles can keep the pocket clean and
establish their ground game early, they will control the tempo and keep Patrick Mahomes off the
field.
Explosive Plays and Early Momentum
The Eagles’ playoff run has been defined by fast starts and big plays. Hurts’ 44-yard run against
the Rams and Barkley’s 60-yard touchdown against Washington set the tone early in those
matchups. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has done a great job scheming up opportunities
for early-game explosions, and the Eagles need to strike quickly again.
The Chiefs’ defense has been one of the best in the league, but they have shown vulnerability
against the run. If Philadelphia can create chunk plays early, it will open up the passing game
for Hurts, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith.
Contain Patrick Mahomes
Slowing down Mahomes is easier said than done, but the Eagles must make his job as difficult
as possible. That starts with their defensive front, which will need a relentless pass rush from
Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, and Jalen Carter. Keeping Mahomes in the pocket and forcing
him into quick decisions will be key.
On the back end, the Eagles’ secondary has to be disciplined. Tight end Travis Kelce remains
Mahomes’ go-to weapon, and the Eagles cannot afford to let him take over the game like he did
in Super Bowl LVII. If Philadelphia can limit Mahomes’ off-script plays and force the Chiefs to
grind out long drives, they will give themselves a great chance to win.
The Business Trip Mindset
This game is personal for the Eagles. The difference in their demeanor from two years ago is
noticeable—they aren’t just happy to be here, they are here to win. With veterans like Jason
Kelce gone, new leaders have emerged, and this team is locked in on one goal.
If the Eagles can win at the line of scrimmage, generate explosive plays, and make life difficult
for Mahomes, they will leave New Orleans as Super Bowl champions.
Prediction: Eagles 27, Chiefs 24
