Statement on COVID-19

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Peter Paige released the following statement:

“In Miami-Dade we’ve been able to protect lives and livelihoods throughout the pandemic by following the science since day one. Getting vaccinated, and getting boosted as soon as you’re eligible, remains the single best protection we have against serious illness and death – and our community’s high vaccination rate is continuing to keep the number of serious cases low despite the spread of the Omicron variant. Getting tested if you have symptoms or have been exposed is essential to preventing the spread, and that’s why we have worked so hard to keep free testing widely available and to expand to meet the recent surge in demand.

We are also committed to making new measures and the latest mitigation tools available across our community, including monoclonal antibody treatments – as we press for more sotrovimab, which we know to be more effective against Omicron – and laying the groundwork to offer the antiviral pills as soon as supplies are ready.

We are extremely proud of how far we have come, working hand in hand with businesses and residents to take the simple, critical steps that keep us safe, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
