Softball Opens Conference Play with Pirates

AMPA, March 23, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team will start their 2023 American Conference slate with a three-game series at home against the East Carolina Pirates starting this Friday, March 24.

USF will also welcome back former players for alumni weekend this weekend.

LAST WEEK

The Bulls went 4-3 last week, with wins over Jacksonville, Lehigh, Marist, and No. 11/9 Texas. South Florida walked off Lehigh and Texas in the same day, the second time the Bulls have walked off twice in one day this season. The last time was in the double-header against Pennsylvania.

USF has walked off two opponents in one day four times now. In 2020, they walked off then No. 12 Tennessee and FIU. In 2015, now pitching coach, Karla Claudio-Rivera hit a grand slam to send the Bulls to extra innings against Tulsa and then hit the game-winning two run home run later that day.

Kathy Garcia-Soto (Tampa) hit both walk off’s, one was a single against Lehigh. Against Texas, she hit her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Tieley Vaughn (Wesley Chapel) also hit her first career home run against Texas on Sunday. Hers also came in the bottom of the seventh. It broke up the no-hitter Texas had.

Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) was halfway to hitting for the cycle against Lehigh. She finished the game with two doubles and a triple. The last time a player hit two doubles in a single game was on April 18, 2021, when Bethaney Keen hit two against FGCU.
