SMU Advances to NCAA Men’s Golf National Finals

IRVING, Texas – The SMU Mustangs men’s golf team finished tied for fourth place at the NCAA Stanford Regional on Wednesday to qualify for the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship Finals on May 24-29 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

The championship format in Carlsbad will include 30 teams and six individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play, and then the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team competing for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the team national championship.

The Mustangs entered the final round in fifth place and needed to stay in the top five to advance. After shooting an even 280 on the final round of play, SMU tied with Stanford at 10-under 830 for the final two advancing spots.

Zach Kingsland was the highest finishing Mustang, tying for 18th place at 2-under 208.  Chaz Aurilla shot 1-under 209 to finish tied for 26th place, while Matthew Foster and J Holland Humphries rounded out the Mustangs scoring, shooting par and tying for 28th place.

The Mustangs will head back to the NCAA Championship for the 23rd time in program history, including their third appearance in the last five tournaments.
