BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University junior outfielder Nolan Schanuel has been named to the preseason watch list for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes award. The award honors the top amateur baseball player in the nation and is given each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship. One of the most prestigious honors in amateur baseball, previous winners include current major leaguers Stephen Strasburg (2009), Bryce Harper (2010), and Kris Bryant (2013).
Schanuel is one of 55 high school and college athletes from across the country to earn a spot on the initial list which will be updated throughout the season. A midseason watch list will be released on April 5 and the award winner will be announced on June 25.
The recognition adds to a hefty list of preseason honors for the third-year slugger from Boynton Beach. Schanuel has been named as a Preseason All-American by five major publications. Last week, Conference USA selected him as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year.
