SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Rice Owls men maintained the lead, while the Charlotte 49ers women moved into first place following day two of the 2024 American Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships on Friday at UTSA Park West Athletics Complex.
The Owls lead the field on the men’s side with 64 points, followed by Charlotte’s 49 points and Wichita State’s 46 points. On the women’s side, the 49ers lead all schools with 48 points with Rice’s just behind with 42.5 points. Wichita State rounds out the top three with 39.5 points.
Day two began with the conclusion of the heptathlon where Rice’s Eliza Kraule finished a record-breaking performance, earning the gold medal with 5,774 points, setting the most points in the conference meet. Wichita State’s Destiny Masters earned silver with 5,601 points, while SMU’s Olivia Dobson finished with 5,526 points for third place.
Wichita State teammates Adria Navajon and Hudson Bailey podiumed in the decathlon with Navajon earning the gold medal with 7,213 points and Bailey earning the bronze medal with 6,844 points. Rice’s Vincent Arousell finished in second place with 7,041 points.
Memphis’ Poorna Raorane took home gold in the women’s shot put with a throw of 16.10 meters, while Charlotte’s Patience Marshall earned silver with a throw of 15.31 meters. North Texas’ Dionna James set a personal best throw of 14.88 meters to finish in third place.
In women’s long jump, SMU’s Funminiyi Olajide took home the gold medal with a fourth attempt of 6.59 meters to overtake UTSA’s Ida Breigan’s mark of 6.43 meters. In third place, South Florida’s Shaniya Benjamin had a final jump of 6.18 meters to take the bronze medal.
Charlotte’s Riley Felts took home the gold medal in women’s pole vault, clearing 4.33 meters for the top mark. Teammate Sarah Brown earned the silver medal at 4.09 meters, while Memphis freshman Arina Razina cleared 3.98 meters for the bronze medal.
Memphis took home a gold and bronze medal in the men’s shot put. Sascha Schmidt earned first place with a final throw of 19.26 meters, while Iason Machairas earned third place with a throw of 18.01 meters. Charlotte’s Jacob Soorus was the silver medalist with a mark of 18.57 meters coming off his third throw.
South Florida’s Goodness Iredia used a third jump of 7.69 meters to win the men’s long jump. UTSA’s Gabriel Binion leaped a distance of 7.65 meters on his second jump for the silver medal and Wichita State’s Josh Parrish earned third place with a mark of 7.59 meters.
The women’s day ended with Tulsa taking home gold and silver in the 3,000 meter steeplechase as Katharina Pesendorfer earning the top spot at 10:29.73. Teammate Alicen Ashley earned silver with a time of 10:35.34, while Florida Atlantic’s Anabell Reumann was the bronze medalist at 10:37.59.
The men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase ended the day with Charlotte’s Hunter White using a last second push to earn the gold medal at 8:49.36. Rice’s Gus Gannon earned the silver medal with a time of 8:49.77, while teammate Andrew Murray was the bronze medalist at 9:00.40.
East Carolina’s Sydni McMillan won her heat in the 100 meter hurdles and earned the top qualifying time for tomorrow’s finals. Memphis teammate Madison Fleming (13.49) and Gizel Clayton (13.54) had the second and third top qualifying times.
In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, South Florida had the top two times in Michael Bourne III (14.01) and Markel Jones (14.05), while Charlotte’s Sidney Littlejohn had the second fastest time at 14.08 seconds.
Florida Atlantic’s Jessica Lambert cruised to the top women’s 800-meter time finishing at 2:09.72. Tulane’s Elena Liano was second at 2:10.87, while Rice’s Taigen Hunter-Galvan finished with the third best time at 2:11.13.
In the men’s 800-meter run, the top three qualifying times were separated by two-hundredths of a second as Bryce Anderson (1:51.53) took the top time, followed by Chase Lehr (1:51.62) and Zander Dunbar (1:51.63).
South Florida had two of the top three qualifying times in the women’s 400-meter, with Amenda Saint Louis taking the top time at 53.40 seconds. Je’Nyia Burton was the third best time at 54.13, while Charlotte’s Ta-halia Fairman was the second best time at 53.51 seconds.
South Florida held five of the top six qualifying times in the men’s 400-meter, with Gabriel Moronta earning the top seed at 45.81 seconds. Teammate Shevioe Reid had the next best time at 46.62 seconds, followed by UTSA’s Michael Roth at 46.91 seconds.
East Carolina’s Melicia Mouzzon earned the top seed in the women’s 100-meter dash at 11.41 seconds. Memphis’ Kyndia Matlock was the second-best time at 11.60 seconds, while Charlotte’s Joyasia Smith will be the third seed at 11.64 seconds.
The Bulls also held two of the top three times in the men’s 100-meter dash with Abdul-Rasheed Saminu earning the top time with a 10.33 second finish. Jaleel Croal was just behind at 10.36 seconds, while UTSA’s Brice Chabot will be the third seed in tomorrow’s final at 10.39 seconds.
The 2024 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships will conclude tomorrow, May 12 at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN with men’s high jump, women’s discus and women’s triple jump.
