MIAMI (May 3, 2021) – The FIU women’s tennis team has earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers will face the Miami Hurricanes in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 7, in Orlando.
The Panthers got off to the best start in program history since 1994, as FIU finished the year at 12-1 overall. The Panthers won three matches at the C-USA Championship as well, including a 4-2 upset of No. 37 Rice.
“After not being able to have a fall season, the difficulties of finding opponents to come play us and all the obstacles we had to overcome, I am so happy for our girls and our team,” head coach Katarina Petrovic said. “Despite us having a very young team, we believed in them from day one that they could play in the NCAA Tournament. Hard work pays off and this is a great reminder of that for our team. We can’t wait to get started and head to Orlando.”
Friday’s match will showcase the 39th-ranked Panthers against the 20th-ranked Hurricanes. The winner of that match will play either ninth-ranked UCF or Charleston Southern, who also play on Friday in Orlando. Additional information on the matches, including start times and live stat links, will be made available in the coming days.
FIU and UM have a history in the NCAA Tournament, with the Panthers and Hurricanes facing off four times overall. The last postseason matchup between the two programs came in 2011.
