Owls Take Down No. 22 Miami

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A crowd of nearly 1200 saw Florida Atlantic baseball knock off No. 22 Miami 6-5 on Tuesday night. The win snapped Miami’s (7-2) seven-game win streak and improved the Owls’ 2023 record to 7-1.

THE BEGINNING

Miami took the lead in the first with a home run from slugger Yohandy Morales, but the Owls responded in the second. Christian Adams went to the opposite field for a solo shot to tie the game.

The Owls went ahead for the first time in the third. Nolan Schanuel blasted an 0-1 pitch from UM starter Ben Chestnutt over the bullpen in right field for a three-run HR. Schanuel’s second of the year made it 4-1.

THE TURNING POINT

Miami chipped away with a run in the fourth and then grabbed the lead back with three in the sixth. The back-and-forth continued in the seventh. Schanuel led off with his second homer of the game – this one a towering shot off the batter’s eye in center field – to square the score at 5-5. Jackson Ross followed with a double and moved over to third on a wild pitch.

With one-out, Miami turned to their top weapon out of the bullpen — right hander Andrew Walters. Walters secured the second out with a strikeout, but Mitchell Hartigan tagged the junior for a single up the middle to score Ross and give the Owls a 6-5 advantage.

THE FINISHMarc DeGusipe worked out of trouble in the seventh and eighth and then recorded the first out of the ninth before giving way to Robert Wegielnik. With the tying run on second base, Wegielnik induced a pop up and a strikeout to crush Miami’s comeback attempt.

THE ARMS

  • Evan Waterbor delivered another solid midweek start with five innings and one earned run allowed. He struck out four.
  • Wegielnik and Sam Drumheller each appeared for the third straight game. Drumheller tossed 1.1 scoreless. After recording nine saves in 2022, Wegielnik notched his first of this season.
  • DeGusipe earned the win to move to 2-0. He walked two and allowed two hits but did not concede a run in two full innings of work.

THE BATS

  • Schanuel finished with his third straight multi-hit game (3-for-4) and his first career multi-HR game.
  • Ross and Dylan Goldstein recorded two hits apiece.
  • Adams’ home run was his third of the year.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Owls will look to keep the momentum going on Friday when they welcome UCONN (3-3) to town for the first of a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
