Oakland Park to celebrate grand opening of a community center

From David Volz

The City of Oakland Park will celebrate the grand opening of the new North Andrews Gardens Community Center. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, October 20th, at 4 p.m. at 250 NE 56th Court. There will be a free barbeque and tour the beautiful new community center. Kids are invited to play on the playground and basketball court. The North Andrews Gardens Community Center is the second park and first new building completed under Oakland Park’s Building Our 2nd  Century bond initiative to create new facilities and amenities leading up to the City’s centennial in 2029.

Oakland Park educators are being recognized for their outstanding work! The U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board recently announced that Shawn Allen of Lloyd Estates Elementary in Oakland Park has received a Fulbright Leaders for Global Schools Program award. As a Fulbright recipient, Allen will share knowledge and foster meaningful connections across communities in the United States and abroad. This is a very prestigious honor.

Rickards Middle School employees were honored. Lauren Underhill was named Teacher of the Year for Rickards. She has been teaching for more than 35 years. Nina Hernandez was named Employee of the Year for the school.

Oakland Park leaders congratulate Mrs. Underhill and Miss Hernandez for their dedication to the students of Rickards and for being recognized for their hard work.

Rosheika Rolle also of Rickards Middle School, was nominated for Assistant Principal of the Year for Broward County Public Schools’ Caliber Awards. The City wishes Miss Rolle the best through the selection process.
