FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 12 Wichita State took down No. 5 Memphis, 71-65, in the second round of the 2024 American Men’s Basketball Championship on Thursday, March 14 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the win, the Shockers (15-18) advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4 UAB on Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
The Shockers became the lowest seed to win two games in American Championship history and are only the second double-digit seed to win two games (No. 10 Tulane in 2016).
Wichita State built a 14-point lead midway through the second half, leading 55-41, but Memphis (22-10) battled back with a 17-2 run and took a 1-point lead at 58-57 with 3:30 remaining. Wichita State’s Quincy Ballard slammed home a bucket with 3:08 and the Shockers led the rest of the way.
Harlond Beverly led WSU with 17 points, while Colby Rogers had 13 points.
David Jones led Memphis with 24 points, while Nae’Qwon Walton recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
