BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men’s soccer team started the 2019 season off on a strong note, taking down No. 17 James Madison, 1-0, on Friday night at FAU Soccer Stadium. Newcomer Ivan Mykhailenko scored the game-winning goal for the Owls and Hagay Jalon earned the shutout.
HOW IT WAS WON
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, but FAU held the edge 7-3 in shot production. In the 81st minute, Tom Abrahamsson took a corner kick for the Owls and found Andres Macias in the box. Macias headed the ball towards the goal and Mykhailenko finished the job, heading it past the Dukes’ keeper.
OF NOTE
· It was the first time since 2011 the Owls have opened the season with a win and the first time since the 2002 season FAU has opened with a shutout
· Jalon earned the shutout with five saves on the night
· Mykhailenko scored his first goal in his first career match with the Owls
· Macias earned his first career assist on the goal
· The Owls won the match in regulation after two seasons worth of wins in only overtime
· Overall, FAU outshot James Madison 12-6
· The Owls showed off their depth with 10 different players registering shots in the match
UP NEXT
Sunday’s match against St. Bonaventure has been canceled. The Owls will be back in action on September 6 against No. 14 Louisville at 7:30 p.m. at FAU Soccer Stadium.
