As a sports fan, we are entering what is perhaps my favorite week of the sports year. NFL free agency kicks off on Monday. The NCAA hoops tournament starts on Thursday. And the NBA and NHL seasons continue as does spring training baseball. All the major sports are in action as are golf, tennis & NASCAR. My remote control is going to be my MVP this week!
But when I look at the NCAA basketball bracket, part of me thinks I’m living in a parallel universe. 1st of all, where is Duke? 24 years ago is the last time they weren’t in the NCAA tourney. Fellow basketball powerhouse Kentucky is also on the outside looking in for the 1st time since 2013.
And when you look at the #1 and #2 seeds you have the likes of Gonzaga, Iowa, Michigan, Alabama, Baylor, Ohio St., Illinois and Houston. Not exactly the traditional list of hoops heavyweights. But I like it! It’s going to be nice to have some different teams battling for the prize. Perhaps this is the year Gonzaga finally wins its first national title. It’s a lot better than college football where you can pretty much pencil in Alabama, Clemson & Ohio St. every year.
And for the green cherry on top of this ultimate sports week, let’s not forget Wednesday March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day. It’s one of my favorite holidays of the year. So, hoist a green beer in honor of the best sports week of the year!
