Marlins complete the 2022 MLB Draft with 14 pitchers, three infielders, one outfielder and two catchers, highlighted by first-round pick INF Jacob Berry
MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today completed the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, making 10 selections on Day 3. Of the 20 overall selections by Miami in the MLB Draft, 13 were pitchers, with 10 coming from the collegiate ranks. The Marlins began the Draft by selecting INF Jacob Berry out of Louisiana State University (LSU) with the sixth overall selection. The club then spent its next 11 picks on pitchers, highlighted by RHP Jacob Miller (Liberty Union HS) and RHP Karson Milbrandt (Liberty Senior HS) in the second and third rounds, respectively.
On Day 1 of the 2022 MLB Draft, the Marlins selected Berry, and then Miller with the 46th overall selection. Berry, a switch hitter who played infield and outfield for Louisiana State University for the 2022 season, received Collegiate Baseball Second-Team All-America honors following a campaign where he hit .370 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI and a 1.094 OPS in 53 games, with just 22 strikeouts. Miller, a starting pitcher who was ranked the 29th top draft prospect by ESPN, was named the 2021-22 Gatorade Ohio Baseball Player of the Year.
The Club’s first selection on Day 2 was Milbrandt from Liberty Senior High School in Missouri in the third round (85th overall). Milbrandt, 18, earned Gatorade Missouri Baseball Player of the Year honors in 2022, going 7-1 with a 1.66 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 50.2 innings pitched across his senior season. He is the state’s No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2022 as rated by the Prep Baseball Report and a 2021 First Team All-State selection.
Of Miami’s 10 selections on Day 3, five were position players, led by OF Chase Luttrell (13th round) of Long Beach State University who was the first position player taken by Miami since the club chose Berry in the first round. Nine of the Day 3 selections come from the college ranks, with RHP Evan Chrest out of Wharton Tampa HS joining Miller and Milbrandt as the lone high school picks. The remaining nine players all come out of college, highlighted by Stanford’s RHP Alex Williams (11th round) and Missouri’s 1B Torin Montgomery (14th round), who was originally chosen by Miami in the 35th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, but he opted to go to college instead of signing.
