MIAMI MARLINS ACQUIRE OUTFIELDER OWEN CAISSIE AND MINOR LEAGUE INFIELDERS CRISTIAN HERNÁNDEZ AND EDGARDO DE LEON FROM CHICAGO CUBS

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the club has acquired outfielder Owen Caissie and Minor League infielders Cristian Hernández and Edgardo De Leon from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera.

Caissie, 23, who is rated as the Cubs’ No. 1 prospect and the No. 47 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, made his Major League debut with the Cubs on August 14, 2025, and appeared in 12 games, recording four runs, one double, one home run, and four RBI. The 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a .286 average (106×370) and .937 OPS, with 74 runs, 28 doubles, two triples, 22 home runs, and 55 RBI in 99 games. He ranked third in the International League in OPS, and finished sixth in slugging pct. (.551) and extra-base hits (52).

The two-time Baseball America Triple-A All-Star (2024-25) has been rated by the publication as the “Best Power Hitter” in the Cubs Minor League system. Caissie was also named to both the All-MiLB Prospect Second-Team and the IL Post-Season All-Star team in 2025.

The Burlington, Canada, native became the highest-drafted Canadian outfielder in Major League history when he was selected by San Diego in the second round (45th overall) of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of Notre Dame High School. In 505 games across five Minor League seasons (2021-25), he produced a .280/.384/.487 (515×1841) offensive slash line with 312 runs, 120 doubles, 81 home runs, 301 RBI, and 35 stolen bases.

Hernández, 22, is rated as the Cubs’ No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline, appearing in 115 games with High-A South Bend and hitting .252 (112×444), with 54 runs, 25 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 53 RBI, and 52 stolen bases. In addition to leading Chicago’s farm system with 52 stolen bases, he ranked in the organization’s Top 10 in doubles (6th, 25), hits (7th, 112), extra-base hits (8th, 34), and total bases (9th, 162). He was also named Midwest League Player of the Week on April 13.

The Santo Domingo, D.R. native has received most of his defensive action at shortstop (323 games), in addition to time at second base (83 games) and third base (one game). In 430 games during his professional career (2021-25), he owns a .252/.342/.359 (397×1577) offensive slash line with 226 runs, 73 doubles, 12 triples, 24 home runs, 195 RBI, and 150 stolen bases. He was originally signed by the Cubs as an International free agent on January 15, 2021; the Dominican shortstop was rated No. 5 on MLB Pipeline’s 2021 Top 30 International Prospects List.

De Leon, 18, appeared in 43 games with the Rookie-Level Arizona Complex League Cubs in 2025, posting a .276 average (37×134) and .853 OPS, with 26 runs, five doubles, five triples, five home runs, 15 RBI, and five stolen bases. He led his team in home runs, while ranking second in extra-base hits (15), third in hits, and tied for third in RBI.  

In two seasons with the Cubs, the right-handed hitting corner infielder owns a .276 AVG (76×275) and .861 OPS over 91 games (36 at first base, 35 at third base, three in the outfield, and 17 as the designated hitter). The Azua, D.R., native originally signed with the Cubs as an International free agent on January 15, 2024.

Cabrera, 27, set career highs in innings pitched (137.2 IP), strikeouts (150), and starts (26) while posting an 8-7 record with a 3.53 ERA (54 ER/137.2 IP) with the Marlins in 2025. The Santiago, D.R. native was originally signed by Miami as an International free agent in 2015, producing a 25-29 mark with a 4.07 ERA (195/431.2 IP) over five seasons with the Marlins (2021-25).

Miami’s 40-man roster remains at 40.
