MIAMI MARLINS ACQUIRE LEFT-HANDED PITCHER RYAN WEATHERS FROM SAN DIEGO PADRES

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired LHP Ryan Weathers from the San Diego Padres in exchange for INF Garrett Cooper, RHP Sean Reynolds, and cash considerations.

Weathers, 23, has made a combined 18 starts (20 appearances) between the San Diego Padres and Triple-A El Paso this season, posting a 5.29 ERA (85.1 IP/50 ER) with 41 walks and 81 strikeouts. The left-hander owns a career 5.73 ERA in 43 games (29 starts) with 51 walks and 104 strikeouts over parts of three Major League seasons.

Weathers made his Major League debut with the Padres in Game 1 of the 2020 NLDS at 20 years and 294 days old, becoming the second-youngest player to ever debut during the Postseason. Having never pitched above Single-A in his professional career, he became the first Padre to ever make their Major League debut in the Postseason, tossing 1.1 innings with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.

The Loretto, Tenn. native was the seventh overall pick by San Diego in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft from Loretto High School (Tenn.). He is the son of Florida Marlins’ alumnus David Weathers, who pitched for the organization from 1993-96.
