MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired outfielder Starling Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for LHP Caleb Smith, RHP Humberto Mejía and a player to be named later.
A 2016 National League All-Star, 2015 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Gold Glove winner (2015-16), Marte is a career .288 hitter and has stolen more than 30 bases five times in eight seasons leading up to 2020.
He is the only player in Major League Baseball with more than 20 stolen bases in each of the last 7 seasons (2013-19), and is one of two Major Leaguers (also Jose Altuve) to have more than 100 home runs (103) and 200 stolen bases (227) in that same span.
The Dominican Republic native has five career seasons (2013-16, ’18) of 40 or more extra-base hits and 30 or more stolen bases, tied with José Altuve for the most such seasons by an active player. He spent his first eight years with the Pittsburg Pirates (2012-19), and is one of two Pirates’ players to hit 100-plus home runs and steal 200-plus bases all-time (other, Barry Bonds).
Defensively, Marte’s 72 assists since 2013 lead all Major League outfielders. He has played 406 games in center field and 593 games in left field in his career but has played just one game in left since 2018.
In 33 games with Arizona this season, he hit .311 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs, 14 RBI and five stolen bases.
