“ME” Monday® 9-28-2020 Think outside the box
As adults, can we “think outside the box” like we did when we were kids?
Does it seem like kids can simply think of infinite creative ways to do things like turning a corrugated box into something magical and as adults it may sometimes feel complex to generate one idea?
Can you recall a time when you may have felt stuck and were unable to move forward? Why was that important?
Can you remember what you might have wanted instead?
If we could recall what has worked to get us unstuck in the past, might that help us now if we try it again?
When we are faced with an urgent matter, do we instinctively react and decide what we must do? Why might make it feel easier to do this for crucial instances?
How might it feel if we could ‘think on our feet’ when it comes to less complex, ordinary things?
I can remember feeling like I’d tried everything to lose weight after having my second child. My weight was higher than it had ever been and during the next two years, I tried every tactic I could think of, at least I thought I did. It was near the end of the year, ads for New Year’s resolutions were plenty and with one last effort, I took advantage of free registration by joining a weight loss center. In my mind, I believed this program would NEVER work. I’d be STUCK with all this excess weight forever!
I was willing to try it for one week because I was tired of trying. To my surprise, trying something small and different resulted in a weight loss of seven pounds in the first week! “WOW”, I thought. Maybe I’ll try one more week. Ultimately, one more week at a time and small changes along the way, led to a loss of 70 pounds ten months later. Success! With the support of the staff at the center and the guidance they provided, I had done it, keeping it off all this time!
Feeling stuck in the past had kept me from achieving what turned out to be a major triumph for my health, both in mind and body.
Would thinking outside the box and allowing ourselves to try something new, something small, something different as we may have done when we were kids help us reach our goals more quickly?
What is one small thing you might want to do for yourself that could bring you one step closer to your goal?
