MBB | Owls Set to Face the 49ers in the AAC Tournament Second Round

FORT WORTH, Texas. – No. 5 Florida Atlantic’s men’s basketball team begins its postseason play in the 2025 American Athletic Conference Tournament, with its first game scheduled for Thursday, Mar. 13 at 2:30 p.m. EST versus No. 13 Charlotte on ESPNU, played at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Under first-year Head Coach John Jakus, FAU finished the 2024-25 regular season with a winning 10-8 record in conference play. For their efforts, the Owls received a series of AAC honors, with sophomore forward Kaleb Glenn, junior forward Baba Miller, and redshirt junior forward Tre Carroll named to the all-conference second team, with Carroll also earning Most Improved Player and the Amir Abdur-Rahim Sportsmanship Award. Additionally, center Matas Vokietaitis received Freshman of the Year and was on the all-freshman team.

  • Redshirt sophomore guard Niccolo Moretti and junior guard Leland Walker are the first Owl duo since the 2011-12 season to dish out 100+ assists in a season.
  • Moretti leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.56).
  • The Owls have matched their season-high of eight blocks in three consecutive games.
  • FAU is second in the AAC in assists (16.2 apg) as well as field goal percentage (46.5%) and is the third-highest scoring team in the conference (79.3). Miller is tied for second in blocks per game (1.7), and Walker is third in assists per game (4.3).

ABOUT THE 49ERS

  • Aaron Fearne is in his second year as head coach of the 49ers.
  • Graduate forward Giancarlo Rosado, a key piece to Florida Atlantic’s Final Four run in 2023, has had a career-best season with Charlotte with 11.7 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. He scored 18 and hit the go-ahead shot in the final minute to lead the 49ers to victory over No. 12 Rice in the play-in round of the AAC tournament.
  • Junior guard Nik Graves ranks fourth in the conference in scoring at 17.6 points per game.
  • Charlotte holds onto the ball, averaging an AAC-low 10.0 turnovers per game.
  • The Owls have two double-digit victories over the 49ers this season, first a 75-64 win on January 8 on the road before an 87-75 shutdown at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena on February 10.
