5/2/2024 | Men’s Basketball

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic Head Men’s Basketball Coach John Jakus announced the hiring of Obim Okeke as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach.

Okeke arrives to Florida Atlantic in May of 2024 to join Jakus’ inaugural staff for the 2024-25 season, where he will have a focus on film and analytics.

Previously, Okeke spent the 2022-23 NBA season with the Oklahoma City Thunder as a Player Development Video Analysis Associate. Reporting to the Director of Player Development in this role, he analyzed and charted game and practice video as well as conducted different research projects.

He had previously served as a Player Development Assistant for the Indiana Pacers organization from 2021-22, working with both the NBA team and their G-League affiliate Mad Ants, a role in which he worked with injured and low-minute players, helped integrate new players into the team’s offense, and conducted research to assist with team scouting.

Okeke is someone who is very familiar with Jakus, playing under him as a member of the Baylor men’s basketball team for three seasons where he appeared in 24 total games from 2017-20 and was a team captain for the 2019-20 season. He was also a member of the football team from 2015-17.

During the 2020-21 season, with Jakus as assistant coach, Okeke was a graduate assistant for the Baylor team that won the NCAA National Championship. He assisted in skill workouts for players, analyzed film and personnel for scouting reports and game strategy, and complied individual, team, and game analytics. Okeke received his Masters of Science in Informations Systems from Baylor in 2020.

Head Coach John Jakus
“Obim and I have a special relationship. Not only did I have the chance to coach him at Baylor, he stayed on as GA, where we won a national championship and he took on a meaningful role in my career and life because of who he is as a person and the leadership role he took on with those teams. After spending the last few years in the NBA, he was our first choice in helping us run our film and analytics department. His understanding of not only how to love people, but also how to serve the team makes him a great fit at Florida Atlantic.”
