MIAMI (May 20, 2023) – Inter Miami CF (5W-8L-0D, 15 points) was defeated 1-3 by Orlando City SC at DRV PNK Stadium on Saturday night.
“I think we had three moments tonight of poor concentration that cost us dearly and [our players] are hurting in there because they ran, they fought, they competed, they controlled possession in the game,” said head coach Phil Neville. “I thought the fans were incredible. I really did. From the minute we walked out they filled the whole stadium, they got in early, they supported us. The players felt that, I felt that and I feel as if we’re lucky to have those supporters that sing the whole game.”
Inter Miami made four changes to its starting XI from its midweek match. Drake Callender started in goal; Chris McVey, Sergii Kryvtsov and Kamal Miller started in central defense with DeAndre Yedlin and Franco Negri alongside them as wingbacks; Dixon Arroyo anchored the midfield with Benjamin Cremaschi and Corentin Jean either side of him; Josef Martínez and Leonardo Campana led the line in attack.
The visitors scored first in the 19th minute, when a long throw was delivered to the near post where Ercan Kara flicked a header into the back of the net to make it 0-1.
Inter Miami responded with increased numbers in attack, bringing on Nicolás Stefanelli and controlling the majority of possession – ending the half with 59% – but despite the efforts the team entered halftime with the one-goal deficit intact.
Inter Miami continued to control the majority of the possession and pushed for an equalizer, eventually being rewarded in the 57th minute. Yedlin won the ball and directed it to Martínez, who played it to Campana at the top of the box. The Ecuadorian striker took a deft touch to bypass a defender, measured a shot and ripped a strike into the top corner of the net to equalize. The goal was Campana’s third of the season while the assist was Martínez’s first for Inter Miami. Yedlin’s secondary assist, meanwhile, brought his assist tally up to three on the season.
Orlando then scored again through a goal by second-half substitute Martín Ojeda in the 68th minute, before left-back Rafael Santos extended the visitors lead in the 86th for the definitive 1-3 scoreline.
Inter Miami will return to action at DRV PNK Stadium next Tuesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET when it faces Nashville SC in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16.
