Three-game unbeaten streak snapped after quick turnaround; team set to play at Cincinnati on Sunday
MIAMI (May 12, 2021) – Inter Miami CF (1-2-2, 5 points) fell 0-2 against CF Montréal in front of a sellout crowd at DRV PNK Stadium. The loss snapped a three-game unbeaten streak for the team after a quick turnaround for the midweek match.
“The first half was unacceptable from us all, myself included”, said head coach Phil Neville. “We performed better in the second half, but ultimately we were beaten by the better team. It’s hard to take and it’s the first time it’s happened this season. I think it’s a bit of a reality check for us in terms of where we are and where we want to get to. We know we have a lot of work to do. We know the areas that we have to improve and we’re just going to keep working hard and make sure we perform better on Sunday. It’s about recovery, getting rested and making sure that we prepare right for Sunday.”
Inter Miami opened the match with an unchanged starting XI following Sunday’s hard-fought draw with Atlanta.
The opening moments of the match favored the visitors as Montréal threatened with energetic pressing. A pair of defensive interventions in the box from Victor Ulloa and Brek Shea saw Inter Miami keep Montréal at bay. In the 14th minute, however, Djordje Mihailovic played a pass behind the defense that Bjørn Johnsen ran onto before striking a low shot inside the near post for a 0-1 lead.
Inter Miami nearly responded with a chance of their own in the 24th minute; good passing interplay saw Blaise Matuidi slip Jay Chapman in behind the defense down the left wing, who cut a pass back to Rodolfo Pizarro in the box. The Mexican midfielder controlled the pass well and laid a pass off to Shea at the top of the box, whose powerful shot drew a diving save.
In the 25th minute, Montreal doubled its lead; Romell Quioto made a run down the left wing and hit a pass into the box for Johnsen, who flicked a shot off the far post and into the back of the net. Montréal held its 0-2 lead through the remainder of the first half.
Inter Miami opened the second half with one substitution, bringing on Federico Higuaín for Chapman. Moments later, however, the match entered a weather delay at the 47-minute mark.
After a nearly two-and-a-half hour delay, the match resumed at DRV PNK Stadium. Tactical adjustments from Neville helped the team find more control of the match after a difficult first half.
Joevin Jones, who came on for Shea in the 63rd minute, made several runs down the left wing, troubling the Montréal defense. In the 72nd minute, Jones beat a defender and crossed into the box. The ball was deflected back to Federico Higuaín, who controlled well, took a touch and fired a left-footed shot just wide of the far post.
Despite the improved second-half performance, Inter Miami, however, was unable to find a way onto the score sheet, falling 0-2 to Montréal.
Inter Miami returns to action on Sunday, May 17, when it faces FC Cincinnati in the opening of the soccer specific TQL Stadium. The match will be nationally broadcast on FOX at 4 p.m. ET.

CRÓNICA: Inter Miami cae 0-2 contra CF Montréal
Se rompe racha invicta de tres partidos del Club ; el equipo se va a enfrentar a Cincinnati el domingo
MIAMI (12 de mayo de 2021) – Inter Miami CF (1-2-2, 5 puntos) cayó 0-2 contra CF Montréal delante de sus aficionados en el DRV PNK Stadium. La derrota rompió la racha invicta de tres partidos del equipo luego del encuentro a media semana que se disputó a pocos días de su último enfrentamiento.
“La primera mitad fue inaceptable de parte de todos nosotros, incluyéndome a mí mismo”, dijo el director técnico Phil Neville. “Lo hicimos mejor en la segunda parte, pero al final fuimos derrotados por el mejor equipo en el campo. Es difícil de aceptar y es la primera vez que sucede esta temporada. Pienso que nos hace ver la realidad en términos de dónde estamos y adónde queremos llegar. Hay mucho trabajo por delante. Sabemos las áreas en las que tenemos que mejorar y vamos a seguir trabajando duro para asegurarnos de jugar mejor el domingo. Se trata sobre recuperarse, descansar y asegurarnos de prepararnos bien para el domingo”.
Inter Miami inició el partido con el mismo once inicial que utilizó en el empate reñido contra Atlanta.
En las etapas iniciales del partido los visitantes se vieron favorecidos debido a que Montréal generó peligro con la presión que ejerció. Un par de intervenciones defensivas dentro del área de parte de Victor Ulloa y Brek Shea evitaron anotaciones de Montréal. Sin embargo, al minuto 14 Djordje Mihailovic envió un pase filtrado por detrás de la defensa para Bjørn Johnsen, quien sacó un remate raso al primer poste para darle la ventaja de 0-1 a su equipo.
Inter Miami por poco igualó con una oportunidad al minuto 24; tras una serie de buenos pases Matuidi dejó a Jay Chapman con espacio por detrás de la defensa sobre la banda izquierda, quien le cedió la pelota a Rodolfo Pizarro dentro del área.
