Heineken Man of the Match Drake Callender records first MLS clean sheet
CHESTER, Pa. (May 18, 2022) – Inter Miami CF earned a hard-fought point on the road in a scoreless draw with the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park. Heineken Man of the Match Drake Callender led the team to the result, recording his first MLS clean sheet.
“I suppose when you come to a team like Philadelphia and you get a point then you should be happy, but I feel, and the team feels, as if we probably dropped some points because we felt as if we controlled the game,” said head coach Phil Neville. “I think the team is getting real confidence. I think the team is getting real belief. I think we can see a clear identity in the way that we want to play. We’ve got players playing with good confidence. And now it’s that final bit.”
Entering its fourth match in 12 days, Inter Miami made three changes to the starting XI from the team’s weekend draw with D.C. United. Callender again slotted in as the starting goalkeeper; Victor Ulloa, Damion Lowe, Ryan Sailor, and Chris McVey started in defense; Gregore, Jean Mota, and Bryce Duke remained as starters in midfield; Indiana Vassilev and Robert Taylor were chosen to start on the wings either side of starting striker Leonardo Campana.
Ulloa started the match at right back, making his first start of the season after missing the first couple of months of the 2022 campaign due to injury. Sailor started for the second time in his MLS career following his impressive debut on the road against Charlotte FC on May 7. Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos, meanwhile, featured in the First Team matchday squad for the second time this season; the Philadelphia native featured in Philadelphia Union’s youth ranks from 2013 to 2016.
Inter Miami controlled possession throughout the first half, but had to defend well as Philadelphia was sharp in transition. In attack, Inter Miami’s best chances came from combinations between Duke and Vassilev, and Duke and Campana. In the third minute, Duke drove forward and played a clever through ball for Vassilev into the box, but his shot across goal was saved by Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Andre Blake. In the 21st minute, Duke collected the ball in midfield, drove forward and played a pass to Campana on his right. The striker then cut onto his left foot and curled a shot from outside of the box that hit the far post and went wide.
On the other end of the pitch, Callender made a handful of impressive saves to keep a first-half clean sheet. Notably, in the fifth minute he made an excellent reaction save with his trailing leg on a close-range shot by Leon Flach, then in the 15th minute he closed down Dániel Gazdag at the near post and made a reaction save on a powerful shot. Lowe also made a crucial defensive intervention, heading a ball off the line in the 29th minute after another shot by Gazdag. These efforts were enough to send the match into halftime scoreless.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Callender and the center back pairing of Lowe and Sailor proving impossible to beat, while the attack created chances but couldn’t quite find the back of the net.
One of Inter Miami’s best chances of the second half came in the 53rd minute when Vassilev pinged a perfect long ball switch to Taylor down the left wing, who cut in and fed a pass to Duke with his back to goal in the box. The young midfielder then beat his defender on the turn and fired at goal, but his attempt went just over.
Callender, meanwhile, made another handful of saves, including diving efforts from a pair of shots, one from inside the box and one from a free kick, keeping the match scoreless through the final whistle. The result saw the young goalkeeper record his first MLS clean sheet.
Inter Miami will return home for its next match, taking on the New York Red Bulls this Sunday, May 22 at 6 p.m. ET at DRV PNK Stadium.

CHESTER, Pa. (18 de mayo de 2022) – Inter Miami CF sumó un punto en un partido peleado de visita contra el Philadelphia en el Subaru Park que finalizó igualado sin goles. Drake Callender, quien fue elegido como el Jugador del Partido Presentado por Heineken, condujo al equipo hacia el resultado, dejando su portería a cero en la MLS por primera vez.
“Supongo que cuando se trata de un equipo como Philadelphia y te llevas un punto debes estar feliz, pero siento, y el equipo siente, que dejamos escapar dos puntos porque sentimos que controlamos el partido”, dijo el director técnico Phil Neville. “Creo que el equipo está creciendo en confianza. Creo que el equipo está creyendo en sí mismos. Pienso que podemos observar una identidad clara en la forma que queremos jugar. Tenemos a jugadores jugando con confianza. Ahora toca trabajar en el producto final”.
Entrando en su cuarto partido en los últimos 12 días, inter Miami realizó tres cambios a la alineación que el equipo utilizó en el empate del fin de semana contra D.C. United. Drake Callender nuevamente fue titular en la portería; Victor Ulloa, Damion Lowe, Ryan Sailor y Chris McVey arrancaron de inicio en defensa; Gregore, Jean Mota y Bryce Duke se mantuvieron como los titulares en el medio campo; Indiana Vassilev y Robert Taylor fueron elegidos para formar parte del once inicial acompañando por las bandas al delantero punta Leonardo Campana.
Ulloa fue titular en el puesto de lateral derecho, siendo parte del once estelar por primera vez esta temporada luego de perderse el inicio de la campaña por lesión. Por su parte, el guardameta CJ Dos Santos figuró en una convocatoria del Primer Equipo para un día de partido por segunda vez esta temporada; además el oriundo de Filadelfia estuvo en las filas de los equipos juveniles del Philadelphia Union del 2013 al 2016.
Inter Miami dominó en posesión durante la primera parte, pero tuvo que defender de buena manera ya que el cuadro de Filadelfia estaba fino en las transiciones. En ataque, las mejores ocasiones de Inter Miami surgieron luego de jugadas en combinación entre Duke y Vassilev. Y Duke y Campana. En el minuto tres, Duke condujo hacia el frente y entregó un pase a Vassilev dentro del área, pero su remate con dirección a gol fue detenido por Andre Blake. Al minuto 21, Duke tomó la pelota en su propia mitad del campo, avanzó metros y le cedió el balón a Campana que estaba a su derecha. El artillero luego recortó hacia su pierna izquierda y sacó un remate con comba desde los linderos del área que se estrelló en el segundo palo y se marchó fuera.
En el otro extremo del terreno de juego, Callender realizó varias atajadas impresionantes para mantener su portería a cero en el primer tiempo. En particular, al minuto cinco tuvo una reacción excelente con su pierna tras un remate desde corta distancia de Leon Flach, y luego al minuto 15 achicó a Dániel Gazdag en el primer palo y detuvo su remate potente con una excelente reacción. Lowe también tuvo intervenciones cruciales en defensa, despejando de cabeza una pelota sobre la línea de gol en el minuto 29 luego de otro tiro de Gazdag. Dichos esfuerzos bastaron para enviar el encuentro al descanso sin goles.
El segundo tiempo tuvo patrones similares al primero, con Callender y los centrales Lowe y Sailor siendo imbatibles, mientras que los atacantes generaron ocasiones pero no pudieron encontrar el gol.
Una de las mejores oportunidades para Inter Miami en la mitad vino al minuto 53 cuando Vassilev envió un cambio de juego preciso para Taylor sobre la banda izquierda, quien recortó hacia el centro y habilitó a Duke que estaba de espaldas a la portería. El joven centrocampista luego dejó en el camino a su defensor al darse la media vuelta y remató a marco, pero su intento por poco se marchó fuera por encima del travesaño.
Por su lado, Callender realizó varias salvadas más, incluyendo una atajada voladora en dos ocasiones distintas, una dentro del área y otra en una jugada a balón parado, con lo que el marcador se mantuvo sin goles hasta el pitazo final. Con el resultado, el joven portero sumó su primera valla invicta en la MLS.
Inter Miami volverá a casa para su siguiente partido, en el cual se medirá al New York Red Bulls este domingo 22 de mayo a las 6 p.m. ET en el DRV PNK Stadium.
