LIONS HEAD COACH DAN CAMPBELL QUOTE SHEET

September 2, 2025

Opening Statement: “Proud of those guys that are our captains. Really, repeat once again. Very much the same as last year. It’s a big honor when your teammates give their vote of approval and look at you that way. (Lions QB Jared) Goff and (Lions T Penei) Sewell and (Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown) Saint, (Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson) Hutch and (Lions LB) Alex (Anzalone) and then (Lions LB Grant) Stuard, our new guy coming in establishing himself. Like all of them, man, when your best players are your hardest workers, and they grind it every day, it’s hard not to have success. Proud of those guys, man. They earned it.”

On how much he looks forward to having Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson back on the field and how much he adds to the team: “Very excited. Can’t wait to watch him go. He’s put in a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of hard work to get back to where he’s at right now. When you have the game taken away from you for whatever reasons, it just gives you a little extra motivation to come back. So, I’m excited to watch him. He’s going to be ready to go. He’ll be ready to go.”

On Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson’s development throughout camp: “I just feel like he’s improved himself even from last year. Just his ability to bend, his mechanics with his hands, his hips. There are tricks of the trade you learn along the way as you grow, and I do feel like from a flexibility standpoint, and then just continuing to hone his own skills, I think you can elevate yourself even a little bit more. I just feel like he’s done that, and here’s what you know, he’s going to give you everything he’s got every play he’s out there. Every play. So, that’s why I’m excited because I know they guy’s going to give us everything he’s got, no matter what it is.”

On why the Lions have been successful playing at Lambeau Field in recent years: “Man, we love Lambeau. It’s awesome. That’s one of those places, on the eighth day, the good Lord made Lambeau so we can go out there and play in it. First Super Bowl, Ice Bowl, the history it’s got. It’s in the same location. It’s been upgraded, all those, but it’s got that deep history to it. It’s the grass, man, it’s the elements, it’s just the mystique. It’s awesome. If you love football, you love going to play there. So, our guys look forward to it. It’s one of those special places to go play.”

On how much the organization values keeping core players on the roster year after year: “Anybody we believe fits what we’re about and is somebody that continues to put out the effort, continue to improve themselves, they fit what we’re about, then yeah, we’re all about it if both sides can agree. You can’t keep everybody, but you do your best to – I do believe in continuity as much as possible. It doesn’t always work out that way, but I think when you’re around a group of guys for an extended period of time, you know what the other person’s thinking without saying a word. I think that goes a long way. Coaches, players, the whole thing. Your communication level is just different. And then you know what you’re going to get out of that guy, you’ve been around him long enough, so you’ve probably been through every situation. Man, I go back to that group that was here in ’21, I know exactly what those guys were made of. Look, we’ve added to that, and they’ve learned from those guys, from that group that was here. But when times are at their worst, I know exactly what those guys are like, and that’s invaluable. That’s invaluable. So, I’ll go with those guys any day. So, I do think that’s big. And we don’t worry about what everybody else does, the moves they make, the rosters, that has nothing to do with us. It’s all about what we do and who we believe in and we want to go to war with as it pertains to NFL football.”

On Lions DL DJ Reader’s silent development throughout camp and the role he will play for the team this year: “He knows what he’s about here and what he means to us, and I think he’s one of those guys who’s just silently gotten better, too. He was coming off the quad injury and worked himself back. Rehabbed, got back – I thought had a really good year for us last year. And he looks better, too, because he had a full offseason, right? He’s almost two years removed from the injury he had, so he’s in a good spot, and absolutely we’re going to need him. He’s been one of those – I hate to say silent – but it’s kind of been this quiet, really kickass camp. He really has, man. He’s shown up. He’s a staple for us right now, and yes, we’re going to need him. He’s big for us.”

On how important Lions DL DJ Reader’s presence has been for Lions DL Tyleik Williams and his development: “Anytime you’ve got the right kind of vets in front of you that know how to produce, know how to practice, are good dudes, willing to help you, it only helps elevate your own game. The coaches can give you so much, but those vets who do it right and understand ball, they can really help you elevate your game to another level. So, having Reader is big in that room.”

On Lions EDGE Marcus Davenport’s development throughout camp and his value on the defensive line: “He’s another guy who’s had a really good camp for us. He’s done exactly what we’ve asked him to do. He’s got some versatility with his ability to play, really in all the packages that we have. There’s nothing more that he needs to show me. I know he can do it all. He’s doing everything he can to take care of his body, and he went through a rigorous offseason to try to help all of that which is a credit to him to put the work out. He’s in a good place right now. Him opposite of (Lions EDGE Aidan Hutchinson) Hutch, it’s pretty good right now. So, I think he just continues on the trajectory he’s at right now and just take it one day at a time. I’m glad we got him.”

On what he has liked about Lions Assistant Head Coach/Wide Receivers Scottie Montgomery’s coaching style and how he thinks he can continue to develop the team’s core wide receivers: “Look, Scottie’s a stud, man. He is. He’s an invaluable coach for me. He does a lot. He wears really a lot of different hats. Not only the assistant head coach, but the receivers, the offense, screen game, the pass game, the splits, the formations, the tendencies. I mean, he wears a ton of hats. So, anytime you’ve got a guy who really is a damn good coach, knows how to communicate, has a good rapport with the guys, understands what we want offensively, knows what I want, and you give him more people to have that’s really your guys, you can’t help but get better. So, that room’s going only to get even better than it’s been, and those guys are really receptive to him and respect the hell out of him.”

On the trade for Packers DL Micah Parsons and what goes into acquiring big-name players: “I think it’s all-encompassing, really. I really think it’s got to be – I think you’ve got to check a lot of boxes. You have to be able to check every one of them off and say, ‘Alright, it’s right, we can make it work financially. What are you going to have to give up?’ But I think there’s more than just, ‘Is he a great player?’ Well, of course he is. That’s the easy one. But yeah, there’s a lot more that goes into that.”

On his initial reaction to Packers DL Micah Parsons being traded to Green Bay from the Cowboys: “Yeah, there were some rumors going on there, so I guess I wasn’t really surprised when it happened. But yeah, he’s a great player and adds to an already competitive division and certainly is a tough player to face, but we’ll see. We’ll see. I know he had the back injury, so we’ll see if he ends up being out there.”

On if he feels like there is more on his plate with the offense going into year 10 and if he welcomes that added responsibility: “Yeah. I do. I really do. I really try to see how much I can handle every week and I think it’s kind of – I try to ask for more, ask for more, ask for more and it’s kind of their job to governor that. Ultimately we’ve done a good job over the past handful of years doing that and then this year it’s kind of ramped up a little bit, which is great and I’ve owned it. I’m in my tenth year and feel like there’s certain things I can help with. And (Lions Offensive Coordinator John Morton) Johnny’s been awesome listening as well as giving me feedback when he disagrees with something that I think, and I think that’s important.”

On if he thinks he is in a great spot with adding more to his plate heading into Week 1: “I do, yeah. I sure do. I think every year is different and you don’t know like kind of who your team’s going to be, what your offense is going to be really yet until I don’t know, Week 3, Week 4. You know, you hopefully have a pretty good idea. But to be honest, no different than last year when we played the Rams Week 1, we kind of were still trying to figure out what we wanted to be and this year we’ll be somewhat of the same. Hopefully we come out of the gates firing on all cylinders, but in reality that’s kind of hard to do right away. But yeah, we want to catch up to speed as quickly as we can.”

On how much he has been anticipating the start of the regular season after a long camp and how he has been pacing himself during training camp: “Yeah, I’ve been looking forward to it. Certainly in a division game on the road, I’ve always said these ones feel like they count for two wins and whenever you’re able to go out and get to somebody else’s place and get a W, it’s important and that’s what we want to try to do. These guys are a good team and I think we’re a good team and it’ll be fun.”

On playing at Lambeau Field: “Yeah, love playing at Lambeau. It’s a place we’ve – I know I’ve played there every year now for five years I guess, going on my fifth year. And yeah, I love playing there. It’s such a historic venue and being able to kind of soak in that history a little bit and be there and enjoy it.”

On his thoughts about Vegas changing the Packers to be the favorites to win the NFC North after they added Packers DL Micah Parsons: “Yeah, Vegas has been wrong before, right? Yeah, who knows. We’ll see. I think yeah, they’re a good team, they added a good player and we’re all zero and zero, so we will see.”

On how important he thinks continuity of the roster is: “Yeah, I do think it’s important. I do, I really do. I think it speaks to kind of who we’ve been the last handful of years that we have the same players coming back and that upstairs has rewarded those players and kept them in house. And it’s important. It’s important for the locker room to have the same guys coming back, to have the same leaders in the room. We just had captains, it’s all the same guys and I think that’s important. And they’ve done a good job of keeping our roster together, yeah.”

On how Lions OL Graham Glasgow has handled the center position: “Great. Been great.”

On if new preparation has gone into Lions OL Graham Glasgow transitioning to start at center and if there are differences: “No, there’s a lot of similarities and there’s a lot of differences from (former Lions C) Frank (Ragnow). Obviously Frank is such a great player and it’s hard to replace him in any capacity. But Graham is a great player in his own right as well and has done a hell of a job stepping into that role, and even last year at times when he needed to step in there. He’s been great. I mean he really has. He’s taken a lot of the responsibility on his shoulders and I thought today was great by him, and he’s been a lot of fun to work with.”

On how much more production he thinks can be extracted from his arm: “Yeah, I don’t know. Statistically, I don’t really concern myself. I don’t really care. I’m just trying to win and if the stats come, stats come, great. But yeah, it’s – I don’t know how to answer that without just saying all I care about is winning, really.”

On how the receiving corps has evolved going into this season: “Good question. I mean (Lions WR Jameson Williams) Jamo’s obviously the one that everyone is talking about. The big step he’s taken forward has been fun to watch, (Lions WR Amon-Ra) St. Brown’s just continuing to be as consistent as ever and the All-Pro caliber player he’s been. I’ve felt things have been great. And then the young guy, (Lions WR Isaac) TeSlaa’s stepping in there and doing a good job and becoming a fixture on offense. Obviously losing (former Lions WR) Tim (Patrick) is tough and it’s not something ever you want to see as a quarterback, especially a guy you like and has been reliable. But, I thought Isaac’s done a good job stepping in there and being a good player.”

On how he felt about his training camp performance and where he thinks he is at now heading into Week 1: “Great. Yeah, feel great. I’m glad it’s over. Glad we’re playing football now.”

On how much last year confirmed that the team has to win in the regular season although the season will be ultimately judged on their postseason performance: “I think, yeah, certainly you’re working to get into the playoffs, I think that’s why these games are so important. And they are equally as important as every other week. It’s not Week 1 versus Week 17, they all count the same, I’ve always said that. And to your point, yeah, once we get to the playoffs, we’ll have that conversation of how important those games are. But, right now, you’re just trying to win the first one and start 1-0 and move on from there.”

On if he enjoys being the underdog or being favored to win in storylines and odds for NFL matchups: “I don’t know. Yeah, it is quite – I mean, it’s confusing because I don’t even know where we stand externally. I don’t know what people – I don’t really care, but like are we supposed to be good? Are we supposed to be bad? All these different storylines. So, we don’t – you can’t ride that roller coaster, and we don’t. And we shall see, time will tell. Going to try to win this first one and move on from there. But yeah, sorry, I like being on this side of it more when they’ve had us, to answer your question.”

On how he will know when his relationship with Lions Offensive Coordinator John Morton is at a similar level to where it was with former Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson: “Sure, it takes time. I mean, I feel great with him though right now. It’s different because of just three years of Ben is three years with anybody and it’s my first year with Johnny. But, he sees the game very similar to the way I do, and really very similarly to the way that I was taught in LA. With (Rams Head Coach) Sean (McVay) being with (former Raiders Head Coach) Jon Gruden, him being with Jon Gruden, like there’s a lot of crossover there so it does take me back a little bit to those days and some of the philosophies are similar there. So there is a lot of carry over that helps. And then again, I’ve said it a million times, the fact that we were together at one point and have a relationship prior to him being my coordinator is extremely important and allows us to kind of speak freely to each other.”
