Lawson Nets Hat Trick in UAB’s 7-2 Victory over Kennesaw State

BIRMINGHAM – Stella Lawson scored in the 5th, 14th and 15th minutes in UAB’s 7-2 victory over Kennesaw State on Thursday night at PNC Field.

 
The Blazers (2-0-1) also got goals from Asha ZunigaMorgan HalliwillCarlyn Presley and Izzy Passman in the win.
 
Anika Toth and Eve Beyer split time in goal evenly, with Toth making a pair of saved and earning the win.
 
Thirteen of UAB’s 16 shots were on target with Lawson and Presley each having three apiece. The Blazers totaled six assists – Hannah Clark and Claire Rea each had two, Stella Kiss and Halliwill had one.
 
“We are proud of the team’s effort tonight, from start to finish,” said head coach Erica Demers. “Even though we had a couple of lulls, I loved the response from the team especially after the second goal KSU scored.”
 
“Stella has a tremendous soccer IQ, she always finds ways to get herself in front of the net and make things happen,” added Demers.
 
Up next, the Blazers host Memphis on Aug. 28. Kickoff is 7 p.m. The Tigers (2-1-0) defeated Iowa State 3-0 earlier this evening.

  • The last hat trick for UAB was Lexxe Lipsey on Feb. 14, 2021 vs. North Alabama
  • Lawson is the 11th UAB player to score a hat trick
  • The seven goals are the most since the Blazers scored eight at Alabama State on Feb. 21, 2021
  • The six assists tonight was the most since they had seven against Columbus State on March 7, 2021
  • The six assists ties the third highest total in program history
  • This marks the first time since 2017 that UAB is undefeated in its first three matches to open the season
