To Retire at Conclusion of 2021 Season
Edwards Arrived in 1994, Shortly After NFL Awarded Franchise to Jacksonville in 1993,
Serving as Team’s Longtime Communications Executive
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 14. 2021 – Dan Edwards, an original Jaguars executive who until this season exclusively led the Jaguars’ communications department throughout the existence of the franchise, today announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
Edwards is a 27-year veteran of the Jaguars who arrived in Jacksonville in 1994, shortly after the NFL granted the city an expansion franchise in late 1993. Edwards had spent 10 previous seasons with the league office, Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers prior to coming to Jacksonville, making him today one of the NFL’s most tenured and respected team executives with 38 seasons in the league.
“My thoughts are overflowing with fond memories and great friendships from my time in Jacksonville and with the Jaguars,” Edwards said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to help grow a new team in its infancy, to experience the thrills of the playoffs in the early years, to build lifelong friendships and to continue a dream career under the leadership of Shad Khan and Mark Lamping. Jacksonville has been the perfect place to raise my family, and I only hope that after this season ends I can learn to be good at retirement. I have a lot of ‘thank yous’ to say to a lot of people.”
Edwards currently represents the team as Senior Vice President of Jacksonville Tradition and Alumni building alliances, programs, brands and more to generate attention and respect for the history of the franchise.
“Other than Wayne and Delores Weaver, my first experiences with the Jaguars were working with Dan Edwards as I went through the process that ultimately brought me here to Jacksonville nearly 10 years ago,” said Jaguars Team Owner Shad Khan. “My first impressions of Dan at the time remains the same today – dedicated, talented and a professional in every sense of the word. I hope he enjoys every minute of life after football, because no one deserves a rewarding retirement more than Dan.”
“There isn’t a person in the game, within our organization or in the Jacksonville community that doesn’t love and respect Dan Edwards,” said Jaguars President Mark Lamping. “From virtually the moment the Jaguars were born, Dan’s been a positive and constant presence for the Jaguars while helping to shape the careers and lives of everyone in his company. When Dan retires at the end of the season, he will leave a remarkable legacy in football and as a person, and that’s as high a compliment as one can earn.”
Edwards and his late wife Tricia have four children: sons Christian and Preston, and daughters Danielle and Victoria, with two granddaughters and soon a grandson on the way. Christian is in his seventh season working for the Indianapolis Colts communications department, having previously been with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers, while Preston is in his sixth season with the Carolina Panthers communications department.
