(On if they take into account that Detroit is entering this game with their season on the line while they
are preparing to play them) “You do and understand that they’re in the same situation kind of we are. I
know their coach is telling them the same thing: “It’s about us.” I’m saying the same thing about our
team. It’s about us. We’ve just got to focus and just lock in to details of your job, and go to work.”
(On how he is choosing the defensive rotation in the secondary) “All three guys (CB Tre Herndon, CB
Montaric Brown, and CB Tevaughn Campbell) have done a nice job. It’s just an opportunity for all of
them to get time and get some snaps and still trying to find the right combination of guys, but all three
have done a nice job there. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the opponent other than let’s see
our guys play. It’s great for Buster (CB Montaric Brown), young player, get meaningful snaps now and
gain more confidence as he goes.”
(On the challenges of facing the Lions offense when it is relatively old school) “It’s tough. It’s a great
offensive line, number one. It starts there. Two good running backs, the quarterback is a veteran guy,
they just want to run the football. It’s a challenge each week. Our defense obviously needs to be ready
to go, be on point, try to slow them down the best they can. It kind of runs through that aspect of their
offense, and of course, Jared (QB Jared Goff) is playing well. They’ve won three of their last four here.
They’re a little bit on a roll.”
(On if he has seen the league shift back to running the ball more as defenses are smaller) “It’s
interesting. Historically, there’s all the ebbs and flows of the historical data with the NFL. I still believe
you’ve got to throw the football to win in this league, and it helps you score points in this league. You’re
seeing, too, the running game is kind of picking itself up. I also believe that down the stretch here you’ve
got to have the ability to do that. You’ve got to be able to run the football because I’ve been in
situations where you get yourself in the post season, and you might have to be on the road in an
outdoor, cold environment and need the ability to run the ball effectively in those situations.”
(On the expected role for RB Darrell Henderson if RB Travis Etienne Jr. plays Sunday) “If Travis is going,
Darrell will probably be down, be inactive for this game as he continues to grow and learn the offense.”
(On when the decision will be made about if RB Travis Etienne Jr. will play or others will rotate more)
“Those are decisions we’ll make after today and tomorrow. That’s definitely a possibility.”
(On what he liked from RB Snoop Conner last week) “He ran hard, took care of the football, had a couple
nice pickups in protection. Again, just growing, great young player. Quite honestly, I just need to put him
out there a little bit more and let him get more confidence and show us that he’s capable of handling his
role on a big stage. I thought he took a step in the right direction last week.”
(On if RB Snoop Conner can be a tough, downhill runner) “He’s a little bigger, little thicker, more
powerful, run behind his pads type guy. I think he could do that, be that type of guy for us, probably not
going to stretch the defense going sideways, but he’s really good between the tackles. I think that’s
something that could turn into a good role for him.”
(On what about QB Trevor Lawrence’s throws lead receivers to say it is a “catchable ball”) “I think first
off, there’s not a lot of wobbles, ducks as they say, with his ball. Pretty good spiral. He puts it in a—
Trevor’s tall. His release, where he puts the ball. All those things become what we would call ‘catchable
footballs.’ I’m sure there’s probably a stat out there somewhere that’s a percentage of catchable balls.
He’s probably up there with some of the top guys. All that is part of it. We work on accuracy. That’s
something you can work on. You can improve it, and he does a nice job of just putting the ball where he
wants to put it.”
