“ME” MondayTM 3-16-2020
How would it feel if you could quickly hit a “DON’T PANIC” button when something unexpectedly urgent occurs?
When we are faced with fear or unexpected stress, our body physically will react, right?
We may experience tension in our muscles, an upset in our stomach, or even an anxious feeling all over. It is a normal, automatic physical reaction; however, did you know that our emotional response, what we are thinking, can exaggerate or minimize the physical response?
Then I remembered…
When my kids were little, they had this Sesame Street teaching toy that had four big solid color buttons; blue, green, yellow and red. There were different questions asked by different characters and the corresponding correct answer was associated with one of the button colors. The last voice they would hear before they were asked to answer was Grover saying ‘don’t push the red button! Whatever you do, do not push the RED button!’
This came to mind when I saw this image of a red ‘don’t panic’ button instead of the stereotypical “PANIC” button or the “EASY” button. There is even a “NO” button. Guess what? They are all RED buttons!
It is always easier to push any one of these RED buttons, isn’t it?
In that moment of fear, stress, or anxiety what if you heard Grover telling you “DON’T push the RED button!”? Could that moment of pause help you feel more relaxed about what to do? If you feel more relaxed, do you think the physical reaction would feel different?
I’m curious. When you think about “ME” Monday, do you push a red button or do you think about what you can plan especially for yourself?
DON’T push the red button! Plan something special for yourself today!
